Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Concrete arrived Wed pm and got poured. Thursday early sand, cement, type 1 etc arrived arrived and is now all in my front garden. Builder arrived and did the concrete blockwork, well most of it as he left gaps for the temporary rainwater pipe connections as its maybe going to thunderstorm...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Well the sun is shining and the guys have bucketed the overnight water table out the footings and finished leveling up the sides and bottom. The BCO has been and although he said wanted 1.7mtr footings not the 1.2mtr as dug due to 2 very old pear trees around 5mtr away, he agreed to the 1.2mtrs...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

I stood and watched to make sure most of the flags came up intact after seeing the first few damaged. I did expect some to be unusable as I had pointed them all in by hand myself and they were not going anywhere. The dissapointment was with the flags around the outside of the trench which...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Well while I was writing they brought the mini digger back round to try and use it to finish the trenches, they only had maybe 2hrs of hand balling left, but the digger got used anyway with its tracks right up to the edge of the trench....you know what came next dont you! I noticed a crack in...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Well the mini digger wasnt mini enough so they were lucky if they managed to get 1/3 of the trenching dug with it as there was nowhere to put the digger while it dug them out. Its being dug by hand now. First skip is full. The digger broke the remaining patio flags before they figured to put...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Now you made me feel so much better! My main problem I guess is that Im trying to do this all on a shoestring budget. I have a bathroom above the existing kitchen that needs a total refit, we already bought a P shaped shower to go in place of the bath as none of us bath, we all use the shower...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Hating it already, digger turned up too wide for side entrance gate so they dug up my fencing that was only put in 2yrs ago. The existing patio slabs were supposed to be carefully removed for reuse by me elseware, carefull isnt in builders dictionary. Dont kango anything that you can do with a...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

Builders around here had so much work 2yrs ago they were like plumbers, put in a high price and if its accepted great, loads of profit. If not who cares. Some wouldnt even bother to quote for such a small job. Now it seems reality has come to roost. I did check with others who I know had used...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

I have a builder starting work tomorrow on a small extension to the rear of my house, we have wanted the extension for years but with young kids we could never quite afford it. Kids are teens now and since being made redundant a couple of yrs ago I have been semi retired. Costs for just a bare...

    Minimum angle for roof

Not sure if this is helpful or not: Bitumen Roof Shingles strip form. Roofing Shingles are applied directly onto the shingle underlay on roofs with a roof pitch between 15° and 45° or directly onto the roof structure on roofs with a roof pitch above 45°. Not for use on roofs with pitch of less...

My first workshed and my new workshop basework

Work continues on the workshop and deck albeit very slowly. I had to refit a lot of the deck due to it being too springy for my liking, I also recut the angles at the end of the boards using a jig so they ended up uniform. I also ran a circular saw around the finished edge where I didnt remove...

    Decking Project - finished

I'm with Karl on the spacing, 10mm is much too much and you will spend your time on the deck hating the view through it. I made mine 5mm, it was recommended to me that pro's use 6" nails as spacers when placing the boards. I also found that pre drilling the board then screwing down gave a more...

    Decking Project - finished

Tierney, may I suggest no more than 400mm 16" joist centers, I used 32mm thick decking boards and any further than that and they got springy. Also with 3x2" put plenty of ground supports or that will also be bouncy. Just finished mine recently and fell into both those traps when using 3x2 low...

    Thoughts on electric vehicles?

Its all just too frightening to contemplate, wars over water not oil and millions of us trying to find somewhere to live thats not being turned into desert or being submerged by the seas. We feel that its something we cannot possibly control or alter so we just bury our heads in the sand and...

Turning my shed in to a workshop - part 2

I am just at the wiring stage of my 20x12 workshop too, lighting is more or less complete now but as for power points I have gone for a mix of Mikes hi level and Night Trains trunking ideas. I have bought 40x16 mini trunking to be run at high level around the walls from the consumer unit, this...

My First Router - Advice Please...

Well just before you order (although Amazon are great with returns) wait till others who have maybe personal experience of these models to offer advice on the suitability etc, I do note that these are 1/4" models where most seem to prefer 1/2" ones, so maybe get more advice before jumping in ;-)
