    Britain's Best Woodworker

. . . at least they sent right person home this week. For my money they ought to send the judges home too, and get a couple of new ones . . . and while they're at it change the presenter with the pathetic, unfunny attempts at humour.

    Timber framing eduction

Have a look at The Restoration Couple on YouTube - he made a timber-framed workshop - loads of stuff about it (It was in Douglas Fir but techniques were the same as for oak)

    Furniture philistine

There were some oak pieces that had been blasted too - including some ornate metal surface hinges and knobs that they didn't bother to remove from a sideboard - blasting pine would probably end with a pile of sawdaust 🤔

Yebbut - there are much better ways of stripping furniture which, arguably, would make it more saleable. The same place offers furniture "as is" and will also paint to colour the buyer specifies for an extra cost (the paint finish on a couple of items I saw looked like it was a light...

    Tool chest cabinet on wheels

Have a look in Halfords - they usually stock a mix and match set of cabinets and various drawer combos. That said mounting basic flat-pack kitchen drawer units on a wheeled platform works and probably gives you better proportioned drawer depths/sizes.

    Furniture philistine

. . . had to post this . . . I went to great big shed full of secondhand furniture yesterday to look for a chest of drawers to clean/refurbish/upcycle/possibly paint to use in our house - I was stunned to find that they were GLASS BEAD BLASTING MAHOGONY (and other) FURNITURE. That has...

    Looking for a Hinge Mechanism

The bookcases were made, predominantly, by Globe Wernicke - Google and there's quite a bit of information and few pictures of the mechanism

    Looking for Wheels for Planer/Thicknesser

I have a planer/thicknesser of similar size mounted on a home-built wheeled platform, wheels lock - don't have a picture but in the same vein I have a very basic table saw mounted on a similar wheeled platform . . . both are at height that enables them to be used, but wheeled under...

Skarsten scraper . . . or suggestions for a replacement please

I have a couple of ancient Skarsten scrapers but blades are getting harder and harder to find - does anyone know where I might get some (I've seen some that are similar on ebay) OR - recommendations for a suitable scraper, primarily for paint . . . I've seen some YT videos where "carbide...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

.... my post was for "trivia and information" - not a reflection on your comment! Boxwood would have been almost impossible for them to work with - for what they were doing pretty much any softwood would work.

    Britain's Best Woodworker

When printing presses used engraved wooden type and carved blocks for illustrations (think of old-style theatre posters) the wood was usually boxwood as it's very stable and can be smoothed to the point of there being no raised grain, and the grain wouldn't be raised by printing ink or cleaning...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

Disappointing - the highlight, if there was one, was the plywood bed. Of the judges, the bloke with the green outfit was arrogant to the point of indifference - and the woman was a Monica Galetti (from Masterchef) clone with a selection from the Standard Book of Cliches.

has anyone tried standard (countersunk) screws with washers on in pocket holes?

IIRC Steve Ramsey on YouTube discussed this question a few months ago - the theory is that it would work, BUT the propper pocket hole screws have a thread that's much coarser than a normal woodscrew and thus will grip better.

    Wine rack project

. . . if it's a rack for wine then the bottles need to be stored horizontally (at least they do if they have corks - screw tops it doesn't really matter) - the pic is for spirits, liqueurs etc.

Sold Cordless nail/staple gun - new in sealed packaging - NEW PRICE!

Out of time for refund, complicated by moving house and a possibility of my brother wanting it.

Sold Cordless nail/staple gun - new in sealed packaging - NEW PRICE!

It's marked in the header as "SOLD" and it is, sorry. To answer your question though, yes - the pressure/force that it fires is adjustable to suit different lengths of brad or staple and different materials

Wall mount fixing for fabric covered panels (headboard)

Thinking about the need for accuracy with the Beau clips I think I would position my panel board without the upholstery then drill through the board and into the wall to make sure the male and female parts register - then upholster the board and fit the clips - that SHOULD make it simple!!
