Your best (and worst) / most surprising woodworking related purchase this year

Best: (Actually a sort of set) - Einhell cordless tools - about 7 of them Worst: Japanese saw from Lidl - what was I thinking?

Temporary workbench recommendations (Saw horses + 2x4 or otherwise)

Pair of Stanley plastic trestles and a top made from a sheet of 12mm OSB (about 70 x 150cm) edged all tound underneath with 2x1 (tile batten in my case) and two 3x2 lengths of CLS attached to the underside (with some end blocks) of the OSB - they sit in the slots on the trestles. Lightweight...

    Aldi Ferrex 10" Bandsaw stand

My similar sized bandsaw is on a wheeled stand like the OP's but with a bigger "table" for the base to bolt to - and is thus more stable. The table height is shimmed to be the same height as my MFT bench so the saw gets wheeled to the side of it and wheels locked. The lower part of the stand...

    Electric planer

My probably approaching 40 year-old Black & Decker (corded) electric plane doesn't get a lot of use - but when it does it's pretty good . . . . cleaning up rough timber, the odd chamfer, skimming door edges to fit in-situ etc . . . not brilliant for anything that needs precision planing. As...

    Price of the sheet materials

Beat me too it - go and look at what you're buying first . . . . DAHIKT

    Price of the sheet materials

The 18mm ply in B&Q may be £42 but it's very poor quality - not much use for anything that's built to any sort of quality/finish.

    G Clamps

ALDI & LIDL both have reasonable quality clamps from time to time . . . cheap as chips, but they do work

    Lining a workshop/craft room

. . . I'd try and persuade her to have OSB for the "cool & trendy" look of it . . . . As hinted at, I think you'd need to scuff the OSB fairly heavily to get glue to take on it - OSB has almost a "varnish" finish

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

That's the first time I've seen MDF referred to as having "grain" 🤔 . . . I know what you mean though.

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

Another biscuit user here - they're quick, easy and cheap . . . joining pallet strips works well to make wider boards for some of the rustic products I make and sell

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

When Axminster was running courses (in Jan 2020, pre Covid) I invested in the on-site bandsaw course - excellent for someone new to the machine . . . setting up, blade choice and fitting, different cuts etc. I actually made a trip of it and did the 2 day router course as well. Excellent...

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

Stumpy Nubs on YT has shown the Castle machine recently - pretty good . . . and Brad at Fix This Build That on YT has a pretty cool Kreg automatic machine

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

As suggested - in the right sort of job they're brilliant - I've been using them for quite a while with a Trend jig that clamps the wood and also a Kreg Jig Heavy Duty Pocket Hole Set Kit KJHD which has settings for different thicknesses of timber.

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

With all these reported XPD woes I remembered being a victim when I ran a bicycle shop (one of a small group) - central warehousing used XPD to deliver bikes to the shops - I cannot recall even one occasion when a delivery was made to my shop on the right (contracted delivery time) day. The...

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

11 pages about an Aldi bandsaw!!!!! Have to say I'm surprised at the possible quality issues - I've bought quite a few tools online from them, including some heavy machines, with no issues at all.

How to protect surfaces while spraying in multi use shed?

Have a look at Amazon and search "spray tent" - start from about £50 - I'm just hovering on buying one (watch out for sizes - some are for cakes and very small!) My current booth is a very large cardboard carton that, sort of, folds flat - it contained a fridge.

    Diy domino

Over at Casual DIY on YT today Tomas reviewed an alternative Domino type jig - worth a look. Not cheap though . . . having just watched the @petermillard video I'll be waiting on one of those.

    Britain's Best Woodworker

The series got slightly better as it progressed - the winner was worthy BUT it was really on design and creativity rather than woodworking skills (the judges were both design-led throughout the series) - the joinery skills shown by the two losers last night were pretty good, way better than...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

Yebbut, why didn't he specify thicker timber and not have to waste all the time laminating stuff?
