Having trouble with wood finishes…hardwax oils vs varnish

I've used OSMO Top Oil clear - several coats, takes ages to dry but seems very durable.

    Restoration vs repair

I too was surprised that he used PVA - and white PVA at that - if I was going to use PVA I'd have used yellow (like Titebond) as that has some other properties. Reality is that chair is unlikely to be sat on - being of such value/provenance so perhaps not so much of an issue?

    FTAGH FTAGH 900mm cooker hood

. . . or make a frame/legs of some sort to mount it upside down, a couple of grids and you have a barbecue . . . that's what our old cooker hood became (y)

    Advice required

I was referring to the word "filler" usually being like wood filler/Alabastine/Polyfilla/caulking etc whereas the filler used for the purpose here is pretty much a liquid. I agree that it does "fill" but not in the traditional sense of "filling" a gap.

    FTAGH Elliot Borer/mill (now gone)

Dominic Chinea (bloke with beard on Repair Shop) has just acquired Bridgeport similar machine - YT video this afternon. He'd have bitten your hand off.

    Mystery Brass Tool

As it's brass I doubt that it's anything to do with food or drink as the metal would taint.

Air filter - RecordPower AC400, initial observations

Your experience is pretty much as mine - good machine although the remote aligning isn't brilliant. As mentioned elsewhere I found the chains a PITA and constructed a "cradle" attached to the joists forming a platform for the box to sit on (and a small space for a couple of tools) The...

    MFT worktop finishing

Screwfix - cheapest - I happened to have satin from another project. It's water-based and pretty much dries straight off the brush - and no odour to speak of. https://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-quick-dry-varnish-satin-clear-750ml/30824#product_additional_details_container

Need some guidance with my wood floor

Have to say that was my first thought as a landlord of a couple of flats - if our tenants took up the carpet (or made any other material changes) we'd be displeased to put it mildly.

    MFT worktop finishing

I have an MDF CNC MFT top built up with a timber frame to form a bench - I gave it coat of acrylic varnish just to seal it - including the holes but did wipe them while the varnish was still wet. No significant issues with dogs (I have a mix of UJK, BenchDogs and some unbranded ones that came...

    Detached garage modernisation/conversion advice

You probably don't want to hear this . . . You are looking, from your description, at spending quite a bit on materials to patch up a concrete garage which - from the pictures - is already crumbling (the reinforcing steel rusts and pops the concrete). I would suggest that for not a lot...

    Restoring an antique dining table...

It looks as if it's worth doing properly with a French polish finish (and do the whole top, inlcuding the extra leaves) Having just been on Peter Sefton's French Polishing course the process seems a bit daunting . . . but worth the effort and work. The process starts with applying...

    Ultrasonic cleaners.

Yep - I'd go for the bigger model. The machine is pretty much the bigger brother of my machine - the drain **** is a useful feature, mine has to be disconnected from the power and emptied by tipping down the sink.

    Ultrasonic cleaners.

I have one - about as big as a rectangular domestic chip fryer - use it for cleaning all sorts of stuff from bike parts to tools to filters for our coffee machine (and then disinfected!) - saves loads of time and you can leave it running. Capacity is about 3ltr and I fill with water and about...

    Oak Block Worktop

Chestnut brand food-safe finish - Chestnut's Food Safe Finish - the charcuterie boards we have were originally finished with 4 coats - leaving them to dry thoroughly between each coat. Satin, wipe-clean finish looks good.

    Mortiser or Domino

I would suggest the mortiser as that's hard work with a chisel and you still get the same quality of work - and for other stuff from sheet materials consider a biscuit jointer as being a "poor man's Domino" at not much money.

    Advice required

The word "filler" is a bit of a misnomer - it won't affect the appearance to any significant extent - and for neutralising the paint stripper I use thinners (or it's called "gun wash" - as it's used to clean spray guns) wiped on with a rag - it dries/evaporates almost instantly with no residue...

Bosch GFF 22A biscuit jointer for peanuts

. . . bear in mind that there's a 21% buyer premium to add to the hammer price and £14 to post it. Makes it not cheap - especially as there's no condition report etc

    Advice required

You look as if you need to apply a "grain filler" post-sanding and pre-finishing - that does exactly what the name applies. You might also be better to look at applying a shellac polish rather than the varnish . . . it requires more work but will be more durable and look better. And - what...

    Pocket hole jigs

It really depends on what you're planning to do . . . I have 3 options ... a very simple block that you clamp on the board; the basic Kreg with adjustments for board thickness that you clamp to the board; a Trend that has no adjustment (other than using shims as I describe in the other post)...
