What are the most beautiful tools that you own

A square that was my grandfather's - and a pair of traditional pincers that were my great-grandfather's (so I'm told) - and I'm also rather fond of of my Yankee screwdrivers.

    Newbie bandsaw question

I have the same saw from Axminster (in its previous form before it was branded as Axminster) If you're making straight cuts a wider blade will usually give you a smoother finish - there is also the speed at which you push the timber past the blade which will have an effect. The packaging sheet...

    Yankee screwdrivers

Funny you should ask - I used one of mine this very day to take the screws out of the hinges on a door that I had to trim down to clear some new flooring* - with a Pozi bit (not the hex ones, the original Yankee bit with the recess in the shaft. Not sure why I used it today, just nostalgia I...

    Electrical advise please

You'll be fine - I have a 6 outlet block and even with all the chargers (3 x Einhell, 1 x Ferrex, 2 x Bosch) running the draw is negligible

Wood workshop air monitor / Air filter

You don't have to hang the Record AC400 from the ceiling - it works just as well on its side on a shelf (one of the well-known YouTube woodworkers - can't recall who - has just that in his shop) - I think the VentAxia plan would make a hell of a mess outside - and probably not be that effective...

    Your Favourite Tape Measure(s)

A couple of run-of-the-mill Stanleys and a Hultafors (the one with the tab that unfolds to get more accurate internal measurements) - and I've known to use an old-skool boxwood folding ruler from time to time

    Budget shop vac

A sliding "gate" that opens/closes the ducting orifice - you just open the one that has the pipe connected to the machine/tool you are using - it maintains the suction in the system. I made my own with 8mm plastic sheet and push-fit waste pipefittings cut in half. Google and select Images -...

    Budget shop vac

Ah - interesting Henry to cyclone pipes! Mine uses the Henry hose from the vac to the cyclone - and the cyclone is connected to the ducting with 40mm "pond hose" and some connectors my brother 3d printed (orange) - the spare Henry hose is hanging above the vac in the (I now have it attached to...

    Budget shop vac

Ditto - with some ducting made from 40mm plastic waste pipe and home-made plastic blast-gates. Works a treat with a cyclone mounted on box about 50cm cube made from OSB with the edges caulked and over-centre clips for the lid to seal and maintain pressure. I also have a spare Henry hose that I...

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

    . . . I thought this thread was about the demise of the Screwfix catalogue . . . . . ?

    Black friday at Toolden

Don't get taken in - a quick sample of 2 de Walt (isn't that really Black & Decker :devilish: ) tools has the "sooper-dooper black Friday price" as being higher than the company that's discontinuing its catalogues . . . and higher also than the South American river emporium. Things are seldom...

    Aldi bandsaw blades

1400 - same as all the clones of this saw that are rebadged

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

I'm guessing that the printer would have been Jarrolds ? I worked in the printing industry in 60s and 70s - and can recall going on a factory tour there in about 1969/70

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

Indeed - if you tour a papermill you'll find that a big part of the activity relates to electricity with big mills generating their own - running all the machinery uses vast amouts of electricity and water (paper starts out at >95% water as a milky solution that's processed through the enormaous...

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

As an aside to this thread - do they still print the massive mail order catalogues (Grattans, Littlewoods etc or whatever they are now)? - they were coffee-table staples of the 50s/60s/70s and then in the 80s the likes of the Next catalogue came along. That said for those companies the...

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

IKEA and Argos have both scrapped catalogues in the past couple of years . . . as a customer Argos seems to me to have cracked it with both the website and in-store browsing screens - but IKEA's website leaves much to be desired (there's a lot more in the stores than on the website . . . . but...

    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

From past experience in the production thereof the Screwfix/Toolstation type catalogues (and other similar multi-product/multi-brand sellers) are largely funded by contributions from the suppliers in effect buying "advertising space" to have their products listed and promoted. How that will...

    Temporary flooring....

Good plan - but don't get the ribbed - you'll never get the sawdust etc out of the grooves - the button or checkplate versions would be fine

    Temporary flooring....

If @Peter Sefton sees this he can probably tell you what he uses . . . . when I did his French Polishing course last year he had all the very smart woodworking benches shrouded in a grey, fluted plastic material to catch any stains or spillages - same stuff I've seen used for protecting floors...

Do drawer boxes require center support?

Ah - having looked up what a "muntin" is that's precisely what I was suggesting - but use "real wood" not a plywood strip, to reduce the risk of flexing. The wide drawers on a Victorian pine dresser that we have uses exactly that solution . . . and has lasted, obviously, >120 years. . . . and...
