Mafell/Triton 'Duo Dowell' versus Festool Domino

I do wish the domino wouldn't seem just so perfect

Mafell/Triton 'Duo Dowell' versus Festool Domino

I know that the festool domino is tried, tested and well loved, and I would love to have the money for one! A significantly cheaper option I was looking at is this duo doweller, Mafell do one but so do Triton and the Triton one is only £150 approx (which is much more within my price range)...

Fitting a soft start module to Dewalt DW745 table saw

Let us know how you get on with the solar system you put together - I would be really interested to know if you manage to get it to operate well! I would expect the van conversion forums/people might have really good advice on these setups as they do them all the time for their vans. Out of...

Fitting a soft start module to Dewalt DW745 table saw

I am wondering if you could do it as a fused spur off one of your ring mains, then you wouldn’t need to wire it in separately to the CU. I don’t think that is the ‘ideal’ way to do it, but I think it might be within what’s allowed, there’s no limit to the length of a *fused* spur off a ring...

Fitting a soft start module to Dewalt DW745 table saw

So mine was a cheap chinese brand, I would hazard a guess that something like a victron phoenix would maybe give much better results, but they are a hell of a lot of money! I think there are two problems (although I am not an electrician): 1. The motors on our machines draw huge initial...

Fitting a soft start module to Dewalt DW745 table saw

Hi John, When I first started my shed (had no idea i would get into woodwork), I had a power system which consisted of 3 x 200ah leisure batteries, connected to a 4000w (2000w continuous) pure sine wave inverter. I have a 400w induction motor on my bandsaw, and found that it would run noisily...

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

The 18mm from 27mm rough, could I get away with slightly thicker do you think? Thanks

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

Not delivered, just planed. The lower quote was actually £1380 including VAT for: Prime Grade Kiln dried PAR Oak boards: 12 pieces of 40mm Thick, 200mm Wide, and 2400mm Long. 9 pieces 18mm Thick, 150mm Wide, 2400mm Long. So guide me - what would be better thicknesses to ask for price...

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

Thanks for all of the replies, I was away for a week so I have only just seen them all since my last post. I realise from all of the messages that what I am trying to achieve is a tad unrealistic, and that I am actually better off in this situation having it machined up for me by the supplier...

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

I have a small planer and thicknesser. I appreciate that I will need extension tables to manage boards of this size. I need 10 boards at 38mm thick, 150mm wide, and 2100mm long.

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

Hi So I am wanting to order some oak, I need 2.4m long, 150mm wide boards at 38mm thick, but the cost was extreme for PAR. (8ft x 6" x 1.5") I am thinking of buying them rough sawn and then planing and thicknessing them at home, but I was wondering what a guide starting point should be for the...

How best to check for metal before sawing/planing

Maybe the workflow should be: 1. Remove visible screws etc 2. Sand back to 40 grit. 3. Visually inspect again, 4. Stud detector 5. machine

    Amazon moisture meters

Has anyone had any success with any of the cheaper wood moisture meters on amazon/ebay or similar. Mostly they seem to be available for around the £20 mark, which seems reasonable. They mostly seem to be aimed at the 'fire log' market, I wondered if they would be adequate for general woodworking.

How best to check for metal before sawing/planing

I have some oak from an old porch that has been taken down. It has been there for years and years and years. I want to saw it up and then send it through the planer to give me some useable boards - I am aware that it isn't going to be the best quality oak ever, but mostly I am interested in...

    Making Sprung Bed Slats

Will the fact that the layers are laminated not be what gives the longditudional strength and resistance to bending? Although the full bed is 1800mm wide, there is a central bar too, so that would mean each slat is only 900 long.

    Making Sprung Bed Slats

Yes I’m thinking of using one of these, and 3/4” ply slats - I guess I can always put the slats closer together if needed to support the mattress better should the material thickness not be sufficient.
