    Removing paint from external walls.

Cheers Mike, spot on. I think I am going to have to grit my teeth (financially) but you've now seen it, could you live with it? Phil, Ozzy Osbourne phase was it? :) One of my previous Headmasters had the bright(?) idea of painting Reception - a Victorian, high-ceilinged, airy room - in a...

    Removing paint from external walls.

Hello Gang, I moved house in September, for a plethora of reasons, and we bought the wee place in the pictures below. As you can see, one original owner's sense of taste was only in their mouths and the ghastly "salmon" has got to go. It is also - our builder thinks - contributing to damp cavity...

    oh dear!

 Speechless. How the hell did you do that Garno? Got to agree with Scaredycat too. Your mate should have talked you through how to do it and not just 'Sixt' you into it.... :? Sam

Cut string staircase, is it the work of the devil?

Kreg jig might work, depends on spindle spacing. Might were as tight together as a duck's rear end**...endless knocked knuckles and the drill kicking same against the spindles... Sam ** ' cos if it wasn't, the duck would fill with water and sink?

Cut string staircase, is it the work of the devil?

" Ah! The bottoms go below the tread surface? And are 'side-nailed' into the tread? Prise off the edging, re-nail, replace edging, prep, prime, paint. Spindle tops are a complete testicle pain...you CAN surreptitiously screw through a 'rear' (i.e. longer) spindle face, into the hand rail, but...

Yerr, dat works in de short term :( ...try reposting on lathe section here, Robbo, Chas and the gang over there have vastly more experience in stabilising wet wood for finishing. Sam

Cut string staircase, is it the work of the devil?

On mine, there was a sneaky wedge above the rail, where the rail entered the wall at the very top, with the bottom of the rail resting on a naked brick face. It was only visible after chipping away a little plaster, but ramming the wedge back home tightened up the rail magically. A 'shark's...

Has anyone used Elu Planer thicknessers?

I've got a 260 like Nick describes. Its my third thicknesser and she's a keeper. Quiet, powerful, safety braking at the shut off, easily maintained, great blades c/o Appleby. Sam Edit: my second one was the whopping DeWalt 733...Concorde taking off made less racket!

Thanks for such a quick reply. I was just curious, having had one of the old 200's and now a Wadkin AGS, but I was considering reverting to an Axi on grounds of space in my 'new' garage being limited. Nae probs. Sam

    Bristol ceilings

Yes Student, I noticed that the stains/dust were quite like those created by messy third formers when we did a prac with graphite dust. Real 'cling' factor when you tried to wipe it away, even with a good cleaner, like flash or similar. Didn't make the connection until you pointed it out...

    Bristol ceilings

:D :D Will! I did the same 30 years ago on a full three storey terrace house (and two storey return) but it was nothing, repeat, nothing, compared to this stuff! At least there it was standard lime plaster and bat ****... Sam.

    Bristol ceilings

Would Eric the viking. or Rafezetter, or anyone living in Bristol, please tell me .."what in the name'God"**possessed Bristol builders to use coal dust as a binder for the initial coat on a lath and plaster ceiling? I pulled number 3 child's main bedroom ceiling - as a favour to him - and I...
