A very fair comment. Spending the money on doctors, nurses, teachers etc would have very similar economic benefits. This would provide services the whole community could appreciate - unlike the provision of accommodation etc for asylum seekers which is perceived as a burden not a benefit.

    Electric vehicles

I think that pedestrian priority is applied with some common sense. Deliberately (or even inattentively) stepping into the path of a vehicle which has insufficient time to react, stop or avoid would not render the car liable. Priority is where a pedestrian has started to cross the road...

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

A rather clever (but simple) feature of the design is that the domes are sealed by water, and rise only when filled with gas. This keeps out the air/oxygen which is needed for an explosion. A gas leak could be dangerous, but the contents remain safe!

Automated vehicles may lock doors unless stationary or involved in an accident. They will likely have the capacity to unlock only those next to the pavement, and (as with a human driver) find somewhere safe to pull over i an emergency. Some will no doubt try to disrupt automated vehicles and...

I never thought that I'd say this but ...

Apparently defending or dismissing that which is happening now in Iran by reference to historical British abuses which have now fortunately largely been eradicated is not remotely convincing. I also fail to understand how Iran's oil and other wealth justifies their behaviours. The reverse...

The normal standard applied in the UK is "innocent until proven guilty". You are making an assumption of "guilt unless proven otherwise".

Absolutely right - all that separates what we now regard as enlightened governance from gross abuse of human rights is a century or two.

Rubbish - unless you can point to an authoritative source for your assertion. AFAIK as a British citizen with normal rights of residency and a current British passport, at no time would I be classified as an illegal immigrant for even the shortest period.

Floor to ceiling doors - how to?

I assume that there will be shelves in the unit some way up from the floor. If the doors are fairly rigid they could bear against this. Just looking at our double doors connecting lounge to kitchen diner - they only bear against the top and one side - the laminate floor runs straight through...

They are guilty of illegal entry - I agree possibly only for the few minutes until they can talk to an appropriate official. The somewhat extreme semantic reaction to what seems to be a matter of legal fact illustrates why the whole issue is emotive and controversial. There is no one...

Entry with or without leave Section 3(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1971 states that, persons who are not British citizens shall not enter the UK unless given leave in accordance with provisions in the Immigration Act 1971 or made under that act. Entry without leave is a breach of section...

They are, as a matter of absolute fact, illegal until they make an asylum claim. They then become asylum claimants.

They were intended to illustrate that which may be a real deterrent. They all reflect the views of some in society - personally I find the "sink the boats" option completely abhorrent. The others may have some merit. Some folk commendably accept a responsibility towards humanity and seem to...

The French are content to see their illegal immigrants leave and will continue to pay lip service to "cooperation" and "smashing the gangs". I don't see this changing. In 2023 there were 67000 asylum applications. 5000 were returned - a higher number than in recent years as it included a...

That deaths are exceeding births is becoming the norm in many developed countries. Largely attributed to improvements in economic performance and medical science. Initially reduces child mortality increasing populations, social change follows reducing reproduction rates. Long term reducing...

There are as many jews in the US as there are in Israel. That the US would leave Israel to its fate seems unlikely - the Jewish population have serious influence, irrespective of the rights or wrongs of support. Hamas and Hezbollah are unambiguously set on genocide. The use of human shields...

    Which vape?

I can empathise - if the future is limited it does not matter what poisons one might indulge in - alcohol. tobacco. recreational drugs. It is about making the final weeks, months, years as satisfying and comfortable as possible. Indulging in that which gives pleasure even after a lifetime of...

    Combined Flu ***

It reduces the severity of infection. Viruses mutate often becoming less virulent. Viruses need to survive - if they kill their hosts the virus dies with them. The Covid vaccine was the principal reason cases and deaths fell as it was rolled out and society returned to normal. To assert...
