Why do so many woodworking youtubers use Blues/Bluegrass background music

Perhaps the woodwork should be chosen to match the music. Power saw and planer thicknesser prep of cutting list needs something quick reinforce the speed benefit of technology - flight of the bumblebee stuff Hammer and chisel work needs slow deliberate percussive rhythm - thump thump thump...

Please help - messed up the floorboards

You could try some floor paint - Ronseal I know make some in a variety of colours. Will not looked like stained wood - but a mid brown would be a reasonable approximation. Would only require some very light sanding to provide a key.

    breadboard ends

I understand the desirability of breadboard ends to accommodate high humidity changes - misalignment of the ends of the breadboards with the sides of the table are secondary to the alternative splitting or distortion of the top. Aesthetics aside, are they something of an irrelevancy given most...

    "FACT!"

I wouldn't doubt that it is a fact. But is understanding and comprehension inversely proportional to speed - slower may be better! Many faster activities carry greater risks - driving = more accidents, eating = indigestion, measure thrice, cut once = less waste etc.

    OSB Outdoors

In direct contact. Corners of raised beds were some 2x2" oak that was lying around. Inside rotted first due to damp compost Then the screws rusted and the sides fell off. This was all done before I took up woodwork properly as a hobby on retirement. I now know that stainless steel screws...

    OSB Outdoors

I have made outdoor raised beds from treated decking which lasted ~8-10 years before failing. They could have been improved by more regular treatment and fitting a plastic liner. I don't think I would risk using OSB. Moisture WILL get in and fail.

Utility Room Cabinets; raised Washer & Dryer for the elderly

If your current w/m and t/d are 600mm wide, they will not fit in a standard kitchen cabinet which is 600mm external dimensions (approx 564mm internal). Were I attempting similar, I would simply build a 400mm high "plinth" to put them on. Plinth to be fixed to wall so it does not "walk" with...

    Silicon Valley Bank

The bank took a risk which did not pay off. It accepted deposits from start up companies who expected to be able to draw down the cash as required together with any interest earned. It invested the money received in an inherently risky asset whose value could rise or fall. As the value fell...

    Is it any wonder why.....

The US regards itself, and is regarded by many others as being the largest democracy in the world. Yet they became the global laughing stock in 2000 due to "hanging chads" and 20 years later their ability to actually count votes cast was questioned by the Trump team. Politicians are ambitious...

Thread direction of a tote, why?

Earlier in this thread, plywood was suggested, apparently in jest. However a laminated structure - 2 sides and a centre - with grain aligned at 90 degrees may provide a solution far more resistant to damage. Traditional designs and manufacturing techniques did not have the advantage of modern...

    Is it any wonder why.....

That sea level rise will inundate parts of both the UK and France in time seems likely. Whether or not this impacts the Gulf Stream is debateable. Recent research suggests that in the UK 200,000 houses could be at risk by 2050 - no doubt with more to come in subsequent decades. Over 25 years...

    Is it any wonder why.....

Tax is just a business cost, but unlike most (all?) other costs it increases if a business or individual is successful. It is fundamentally different to other business costs which are are normally reduced in delivering a profitable and successful enterprise. Suggesting that increasing tax...

why is hobby woodworking in decline?

As others have noted the society in which we no live has changed profoundly in the 70 years I have been around. Employment in manufacturing and construction accounted for ~37% of jobs in 1950 - now ~15%. The services sector now dominates and traditional apprenticeships mostly gone. In the...

    Is it any wonder why.....

I don't understand what is going on - nothing unusual about that. UK public expenditure has increased as a % of GDP to the highest levels since the 1980s - bar covid and the 2008-10 financial crisis. The fall in public service quality is not obviously due to low taxation and cuts - perhaps...

    Affordable vs Pride

Vinyl wrapped doors - 15 years ago I installed a Homebase gloss white kitchen. The only damage to the doors or cabinets in that time (normal use) was by the oven where the vinyl wrapped end panel had started to delaminate (heat issue?) The reason for Homebase - daughter had part time job and...

    Sand battery?

Doesn't seem to make much sense. There are no efficiency gains in electrical consumption - kw are used to heat the sand which then releases kw as it cools down. Energy in = energy out! It uses day time rate electricity to heat the sand when off peak rates may be cheaper Without an accurate...

    Sjobergs Bench

The humidity levels in Brecon close to Defynnog apparently varies between 80-91%. I don't think there is anywhere in the UK that routinely gets close to 50% humidity!

    Thickness planer

There is a lot of professional purist advice in this thread. My take on it: Soulmiester has a workshop 14ft long. The maximum length that could be planed is probably a little over 6ft I assume the machine will need to be moved downstairs to the cellar - large heavy cast iron machine will be a...

Woodworker's Insurance, who do you recommend?

Statistically insurance is not worth having - even if a claim is met, the premiums paid also need to cover insurance company admin, profit, claims handling etc. In summary - insurers pay out less in claims than the premiums they receive. BUT - in the event that you are not insured and have a...

    and today's bargain ...

I naively assumed the bargain of the day was the now empty bottle. The green thing is just an old lump of cast iron (a heretical thought I know)
