Why do we have so many issues with software programs

Like many of the views expressed I also dislike paying an annual subscription when for most (if not all) I would be entirely happy with the functionality of software I purchased outright 10+ years ago. I am also a realist: as Rhossydd commented a few posts back - we are simply unimportant as...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

I can understand the point you make although the figures you quote are a bit doubtful. Assume the software company wants to make the same revenue from an outright sales or a subscription service, and that the typical average would ideally upgrade every 4 years. Simplistically - if the annual...

    Plywood question

Plywood typically has an odd number of plies - top and bottom plies run in the same direction. It would probably be better if using plywood for the external grain direction to run vertically - on 3mm ply there will likely be two vertical sheets and one in the middle. Personally I would...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

Adobe are a successful software company - but like all companies seek to maximise profit. They make judgements accordingly - their possible view on strategy. They have ~30m users worldwide. Assuming there are ~100k photography users means 1 in 300. As companies upgrade products they know...

Workbench Electrics - How would this be achieved?

A face up socket is an ideal candidate for sawdust accumulation. Using an exterior socket with a cover when no plug inserted may be sensible - will provide some protection against dust and spills. Or mount at the side vertically. Having just moved and rejigging electrics I chose to install a...

Garage ceiling insulation & garage door

The house into which we recently moved had similar garage doors - albeit probably 20+ years old (not 3). One centre rail and motor needed to be relocated as it impeded plans to use part of the garage space for a utility room. We ended up replacing both garage doors with roller shutters which...

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

I am not a builder (just reasonably DIY competent) but the job you describe seems like a few days work. Cutting back 13m of patio carefully to leave a clean edge, removing spoil, installing gullies, gravel, concreting in the air brick gullies - I would guess 2 (or more likely) 3 days work...

    Temp fixing work bench top

Storage of worktop - heavy duty ball bearing drawer runner fixed to wall would allow worktop to be lifted onto hooks on the runner and slid behind the cupboard with minimal effort. Worktop - it is probably unnecessary to hold the worktop on both sides of the sawhorse - a simple block under each...

Thermal solar - would this work?

Re-use and recycle. Old radiator, paint it matt black, mount on pads to sit on roof. Consider/trial whether efficiency would be improved with frame and glass cover. Fill with antifreeze at a level which eliminates freezing risk. Cheap - if it works great, if not remove.

    Cheap lathe

Social media (incl. FB) responsibility for what appear on their platform is very current. Misleading adverts for metal working kit is a minor and a very small part of the problem - ****, racism, rumour mongering, fake news etc etc is a far greater societal threat. FB and similar know that if...

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

All policing seems to flow down from the Home Office which sets national priorities - terrorism, drugs, serious crime, violent crime, national level law and order. Regional police add their own priorities depending on the nature of their communities - domestic abuse, roads, drug misuse, crime...

    ***** builders

Not particularly in defence of Postcrete, but the fence usually rots long before the uprights fall over (in my experience)

Workshop burgled, now my tools are on eBay

Tempting though it may be emotionally, I don't think a violent response is right even if the perpetrator can be reliably identified. People get angry for all sorts of reasons - at what point is a violent response acceptable or become unreasonable - eg: does a racist or misogynistic comment...

Need suggestions: garden furniture for my new home

There is no good or bad - it's a lifestyle choice. Unless you are prepared and able to bring them inside, select that which is so far as possible weather resistant. Aluminium better than steel - more expensive but does not rust. Wood good - but unless your are prepared to recoat with varnish...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

I think the old "pay once" software model is thoroughly broken both from the software company and user perspective. An annual cost not dissimilar to a minor car service, call out a plumber to fix a leak, or a family supermarket shop is not a major expense. Even as hobbyist (let alone business)...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

I have only a passing interest in photography and mainly happy with family photos. However it seems to me that if you truly value the work you have done the principle issue is identifying the most reliable and secure means of data storage. I can understand the annoyance at subscription...

    Computer says no ...

Sadly I have some experience of the inside of hospitals from a patient perspective. I don't think there is any single problem that reduces the quality of the service from being as good as it could be for the money spent. Front line healthcare staff generally seem to work under considerable...

    What is wrong with tradesmen?

Trying to coordinate several trades is difficult if it is only an occasional need. Companies specialising in project management normally have a set of fairly tame contractors who will respond as that is where a lot of their future work will originate. We recently moved into a new house which...

    odd?

It seems that establishing the state of charge of a battery is complex and subject to estimation. I am not an electrical engineer so take this at face value! One way to confirm whether one battery has a greater capacity than another would be to place it under load. See how many (say) 6"...
