    TV advertising quality!

TV audiences have been falling with marketing spend increasingly focussed on internet, social media, influencers, etc. Budget limited TV ads will have lower production values. Advertising budgets are directed at those who still watch a lot of TV - those 65+ clock up the most TV hours. No...

    ply chicken shed

If the ply face is exposed I assume any normal external wood finish can be applied for appearance/protection. There is a much bigger issue if the edges are exposed - the grain will tend to absorb water and the glue needs to be suitable for outdoor use. Sealant or paint will slow degradation...

    No Fault Evictions

I have no issue with a very clear and explicit process to deal with defaulting tenants - landlords should be able to recover their property quickly. That the tenant may wind up sleeping rough is not the responsibility of the abused landlord. The problem is far more complex if children are...

    Smart meter con ?

The immediate objection to smart meters are IMHO largely irrational and deny users the ability to access different tariffs for EVs, solar installations, variable rates etc. If folk want to believe that denial of supply through remote cut-off is imminent, or that signal radiation fries your...

    GU10s to LED

May be talking out of turn but AIUI GU10 bulbs normally run at 220-240V. I would not expect them to need a transformer to drop them to 12V. GU10 LED normally have circuitry built in to allow direct replacements with a traditional 240V GU10 and should not need a transformer. Question - as you...

    Joke Thread 5

You could substitute any divisive personality/marmite character as the jogger and it would still be amusing - Trump, Boris, Farage, Corbyn etc. Even "stars" of film and entertainment - Clarkson, Russell Brand, Maradona, Thunberg, ....... It is not a political rant against Starmer - merely that...

    Smart meter con ?

The marketing ploy that somehow a smart meter will save energy is a nonsense. Reducing consumption requires behaviour changes (eg : only run dishwasher on full load), and/or physical infrastructure changes (more economical dishwasher). It is possible to buy for a few ££ internet enabled...

    Thin drawers

I am guessing there is only space for one decent horizontal door - you could fit 2 very shallow drawers which may end up being a constraint in that they cannot be used for larger items. Fitting a lift out tray to part of a deeper drawer may be the best option. The vertical space may be better...

    Oak doors laminate cracking

Are you sure they are laminated. Even solid oak exposed to the elements will tend to develop fissures and cracks. Even finishing oak doors when installed is often judged optional as any varnish will typically need to be reapplied regularly. Unfinished imperfect weathered surface is often...

    Smart meter con ?

Why would you resist changing the meter? There are not hugely attractive additions to household design. They are usually out of direct sight in a cupboard - and older ones a triumph of the black plastic utilitarian design school. The old one if out of tolerance may be reading incorrectly -...

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

The British public have difficulty once every five years electing a government based upon spin, half truths, selective statistics, partial manifestos, etc. Depending on ones point of view they frequently get it wrong - certainly get that which was not expected (eg: winter fuel allowance). Just...

Why you need a full length well in your work bench.

Then run a circular saw along the full length neatly cutting a sheet of ply or MDF, and destroying assorted taps, pencils, chisels etc!

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

Having often used Bristol airport I recall there are signs saying no stopping - I assume well intentioned to avoid congestion on access roads, less so to force the use of the overpriced pick up/drop off parking area. We now pay more for the incidentals associated with air travel than the...

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

I have no problem with charges for car parking - they need to be built, maintained, cleaned, insured and the land on which they sit has an alternative economic use value. Hospitals are no different - given the choice I will happily pay a couple of ££ to park the car rather than waste time and...

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

Were I the sort of character that fitted cloned number plates to my car to avoid prosecution, I would ensure the clone matched another vehicle of similar age, colour, make, model. Otherwise it is immediately obvious that the number plate and vehicle do not match - any sophisticated ANPR system...

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

I do wonder whether there is an offence being committed by the parking company - demanding money with menaces. Their get out with regards to such a charge may rely upon whether the demand was warranted - that they had reasonable grounds for the claim. As it would be evident from even a cursory...

I've never used a sliding mitre saw before, but I've just bought one. Looking for safety/operating advice.

Only thing I can add is that with long bits of wood, the fence and table are too short to provide proper support. It is worth considering getting at least one (ideally two) Roller stand to support the wood. IMHO it is definitely worthwhile for anything over 1m - improves accuracy and safety.

    US Election November 5th

The socialist ideal is equally crammed with tired cliches and half baked ideas. It further suffers from the delusion that an ideological goal can be pursued irrespective of basic human behaviours. There are no developed market economies which do not recognise and accept the need to fund some...

    US Election November 5th

An agreed definition of those concepts we use so loosely would be useful - although sadly I suspect we all put our own spin on them. As a starter for 10 based on simple Google search: Capitalism - an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by...

    US Election November 5th

Most major international challenges of the last 30 years have been handled poorly, even assuming that all players have acted with good intent: invasion of Kuwait - protect oil supply and moral imperative. Ejection of Iraq was right, but a failure to finish the job lead to more than a decade...
