Advice on replacing raised beds in the garden

Hi I did see those, but for four we would be looking at over £1500 which is more than replacing the Oak!

Advice on replacing raised beds in the garden

Not fine woodworking, but I would like to pick people’s brains for ideas on replacing the raised beds in our garden. We have 4 beds that are 2.6m long by 1.3m wide. I originally made them from some green oak sleepers probably about 15 years ago. They have lasted reasonably, but are...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

Well done, it is difficult to keep momentum on things when the rest of life gets in the way. It is looking really good.

    Not shooting straight!

Hi TJC, I think that the error on all three planes is in the same direction. The degree of error does vary which must be due to some variation between the planes. If I get a chance this weekend I will test with lever being adjusted and see if there is space for a fence for the bed the plane...

    Not shooting straight!

Thanks Derek, I need to see if I have space on the board I have made to put the side fence like you use as it would reduce the number of variables I have to worry about when shooting wood. Thanks, Mark

    Not shooting straight!

Thanks for all the replies. I am clearly still going up the learning curve. I have been out in the garage this evening and I think there is probably an accumulation of minor errors. Firstly using two squares it seems the two surfaces are not perfectly co-planar. The first photo with the squares...

    Not shooting straight!

Thanks for the ideas. I think the No 7 is not quite square, but I had not thought about using the lateral adjustment leaver to correct the little bit it is out. I will give that a go and see if it Improves things. i don’t think the board is bowed, but I had wondered if all else failed whether...

    Not shooting straight!

I recently made my first shooting board, which I was very proud of, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be as square as I think it should be and I am not quite sure why, so I was hoping others with more wisdom and experience might offer some advice. I made the board with two bits of decent birch...

Dowel plates? Sensibly priced, & not a transatlantic purchase?

Thanks for the YouTube link. I had tried something similar here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/welly-rack.122681/post-1357453 But had problems with the dowel burning. I like the idea of the three holes round the edge as cutters so will give that a go to see if it improves the cutting.

    Best finish for table tops?

Can I be a heretic here and say I have been very pleased with some Ronseal water based Matt varnish. It is simple to apply with either a foam roller or brush. I have used three coats with a light rub down between coats. It must have lasted at least 10 years on the oak table we use in the kitchen...

    Recommended Rust Remover

Thanks for the kind comments. I think the reality of the situation is that I am not likely to get round to painting it as there are many other things higher up the priority list. I had wondered about the handles as I have just put some danish oil on the bare beech. Again I think they might just...

    Recommended Rust Remover

After a whole lot of cleaning, I managed to get it back together and working. I haven’t got the blade quite right yet and I think the body needs some painting as it’s missing great chunks of paint. But overall I am pleased with the result from a weekends work. Thanks for all the advice which...

    Recommended Rust Remover

Thanks for all the great advice. I can’t believe I missed the restoration thread at the top of the section! I hadn’t thought about electrolysis, but it looks like something I will have to give a go. Many thanks, Mark Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Recommended Rust Remover

Hi, I have been lucky enough to be given an old record No 4 1/2 plane today, but it needs a bit of restoration to be useable as you can see from these pictures: Assuming you don't think it is a lost cause to restore to working order, what is the best way to remove the rust? I have seen on...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I have been doing a bit of making in the garage, having acquired a few planes recently: I made this rack to store the planes where they are easily accessible. I also made simple shooting board never having had one before with an interchangeable fence for 45 degrees. Now I need to get on...

    Welly Rack

Duncan and Nick, Thanks for your comments. It was my first attempt at WIP as I have enjoyed reading others. I had never tried one myself, so I guess you have to start somewhere.

Thanks Andy. I think it is the inner engineer in me that likes making things that work, I am not sure my wood working skills are quite up to it at the moment! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Welly Rack

Well its a while since I have managed to update on progress with the rack. Last time I posted I had just drilled all the bits of wood for the movable welly supports and for the fixed parts and had produced lots of bits of beech dowel. So having carefully measured out the holes in the frame for...

    Welly Rack

So, it has been a while since I updated this and I have made some progress. At last count I was trying to make some dowel out of some bits of beech that I had cut to roughly the right size on the bandsaw. I decided to go for a different approach rather than setting up a chisel accurately. I...
