Planing a board flat - Is there literally no light when testing with a straight edge?

Here’s a proper 10ft straight edge. It needs to be lowered onto the workpiece with a crane. So yes they do exist 😁 10ft Straight Edge

    Scratch Stock

Awesome. Goodbye old Irwin hard point. Thanks Adam.

    Scratch Stock

Isn’t it hardened within an inch of its life? Or is that just the teeth?

    Scratch Stock

Hi guys I’m coming to realise that putting a consistent profile on the bottom of a moulding plane is an extremely difficult business, due to the requirement for longitudinal flatness along all the surfaces. So I need to upgrade my little home-made scratch stock, to incorporate a fence et...

    Old Chamfer plane saved

So with a chamfer plane, do you start the cut with one side of the “V” against the top of the workpiece? Or the middle of the blade? And just plane until it stops? I’ve never really worked it out.

    Coopers plane saved.

Nice. Great to save these old things. What finish did you use? Was the knob on the toe originally a handle, or strike button? I don’t have any knowledge of cooper‘s planes. I guess a knob would double as a strike button.

    Old Chamfer plane saved

ok, just watched the Bill Carter video, looks like Toolsntat is right.

    Old Chamfer plane saved

That’s really interesting. Strange, simple design, I’d love to see it in action. Does it produce a decent chamfer? The iron is tremendously skewed and at an incredibly high pitch. how is the depth of the chamfer controlled? Etc. Does it produce chamfers or spills as suggested? A while back I...

    “Gouge cuts”

Yes they do!! It’s so satisfying. That’s when you know you’ve got it right. That zipping noise. Also, if the wedge fits really properly, as you tap in the wedge, at the instant it becomes seated, the plane starts to ring with a musical pitch when you tap. Like claves. At some point I’ll do a...

    “Gouge cuts”

Unfortunately I’m prone to rabbit holes. The plane making obsession is just the latest. The planes perform well, but I’ve made some understandable mistakes with the last few as I move on to more complex stuff. I guess it’s all part of the process of gaining experience. I’m not even...

    “Gouge cuts”

I never understood why there wasn‘t a simple system which was based on radius and width , like hollows and rounds. Or perhaps there is but I don’t understand it.

    “Gouge cuts”

I think you are right. So I guess I need to know what sweeps match the common round plane profiles. I think I have 8,10,12, 14, 16 hollows and rounds. Which is 1/2”, 5/8, 3/4, 1”, 1 1/4 radius. I will check the gouges I have tomorrow but I don’t have the larger sizes. Tbh I have never got my...

    “Gouge cuts”

You are right that the most common style by far is your second example on the right. Personally I reckon those little “gutter” gouge cuts are to clean up marks left when the chamfers are put on the grip ends. The style that the modern boutique makers like to copy seems to be early Robert...

    “Gouge cuts”

Trees - yes I have watched it in detail, and it’s the opposite of page 1 stuff - this is the place to go when you really want to see how it was done. There’s very little other information on it. It’s fascinating stuff. But.. tbh at the time this video was taken, the industry had left fancy...

    “Gouge cuts”

Completely true. Im concentrating really hard on trying to make the planes as functional as they can possibly be. I’ve nailed bedding and pretty much nailed mortises and wedges, which is really really hard (for me anyway). I’d like them to look good too though. Why not. Surely I can master a...

    “Gouge cuts”

It isn’t really. Larry shows how to do the gouge cut on a much smaller plane. I managed to achieve it in my #8 h&r but it looks nothing like as good as the one by Matt Bickford in my pic above. I emailed Larry a while back and asked him what gouge sizes he used but he said “it’s complicated”...

    “Gouge cuts”

I’m sure it’s dead simple if you know what cut to make… I tried a few this morning but couldn’t seem to get it. Messes with my brain. Which is why I’m not a sculptor. I think perhaps, that it’s a 45 deg gouge cut into the shoulder, the top of which is then planed off with the round. But maybe...

    “Gouge cuts”

Ok, here’s a moulding plane shoulder, a round plane and a nice sharp gouge. What lines should I draw and what cuts do people think I should make, in what order, to achieve the desired result 😎
  19. steve355

    “Gouge cuts”

But is it? I reckon the gouge cut is put on to a 45 degree line *before* the cove is planed onto the shoulder. That gives the impression of a twisting cut when in fact it isn’t. Maybe.

    “Gouge cuts”

I’d be really interested to see how that works Adam. Im sure, given your carving background , that you know what you‘re talking about. But… it’s one of the final operations after a substantial amount of work to make a plane. So it would need to be deadly accurate and 100% reliable. Also, there...
