    Boot sale

Very nice, Pete. I used to have a very nice brass trammel that was my Granddad's. I didn't use it very often, but when I did need it, it was superb.

Ripple maple Finish Osmo or Morrells shellac

FWIW, on my wardrobe that I am building. I started using some Osmo that I've had for a few years. It's kept well, mind and I didn't have any problems with it. I went to my local merchant for some more, and he told me he didn't sell Osmo, but had Treatex, and his customers were happy with it. So...

    Summer's arrived ...

There was a local news story a few years ago of a bloke who called to the owls in just the way you describe. He stood in the garden, called the owl and the owl called back. He never actually saw the owl, but they sort of had this thing going. After a while, his wife was having coffee with one...

    Old School

Has it lost its flavour? :) (Sorry I can't be more constructive...)

    Summer's arrived ...

Well those three eggs are now little birds and have been coming on nicely for a week or two. Today, my mate Charlie and I were enjoying a beer in the late afternoon sunshine outside the workshop when we hear a right to-do. When we looked up we saw a sparrowhawk trying (unsuccessfully) to get...

what's the best table saw sled

Guarding is the hardest part of designing a good sled, I think I have one with a tunnel guard and a rear exit guard, too. It doesn't run any more as the rails are misshapen after spending two years in a barn, but it was good when it was new. The tunnel guard just slots into place. It's fine...

    Wardrobe

I've realised that I don't need to assemble the centre cabinet, as I can fit the rails easily enough at installation time, so it's just the RH cabinet to assemble, which is a relief, I can tell you. These things would have been heavy 20 years ago, but now they are crippling. I bought a couple...

    Planer Accident

This really shouldn't be an Amateur v. Pro argument. It's simply Good Practice v. Poor Practice, and that happens in home workshops and pro workshops all over the world.

    Present disaster

Ah, is it? That makes sense (well the spoof bit, anyway - I can't imagine why she was reading the Sunday Times, though, not her politics). Still funny, though. Ta.

    Present disaster

A friend has sent me this Agony Aunt clip from a newspaper. I don't know if it's a wind-up or not, but either way I think it is hilarious. Dear Mrs Mills, Last year i bought my wife lingerie for her birthday. It was the right size, but she went mad and told me it was insulting that I thought so...

I thank you :) Actually, as someone who makes posh boxes for a living*, I really do thank you. S *You, not me!

    Wardrobe

So would you screw through the sides into the edge of the back? If so the screws would show on the outer faces. I don't think we are understanding each other very well here! :)

    Wardrobe

I could have done that, Bob, but it would mean screwing into the edge of the board, rather than the surface. And if, one day after I am gone, this stands somewhere with the sides more on display, I think it is prettier to see the side panels run right to the back, rather than seeing the edge of...

    Planer Accident

Well on the bright side he disn't actually lose a finger (I don't think), he will recover and have a permanent reminder about why he shouldn't be so stupid. And kudos for actually admitting it it all so publicly. The more people who see this the less chance there is of them doing the same, I...

    Wardrobe

It's time to start assembling these carcases. So far in this project, things have gone suspiciously smoothly, not the whisper of a hint of a suggestion of a ****-up. I should have known it was too good to last :( I made a rod for the positions of the pocket screws. This way I only need to...

    startrite 275 table saw fence

The bodies of these saws are excellent, built to last several generations. But the fences... I'm not allowed to advertise in a post, so I won't, but I built a fence for my TS which is as solid as you could possibly want, inexpensive to build and does not require any metalworking skills beyond...

What sort of stain do they (you?) use please?

Ripple maple Finish Osmo or Morrells shellac

I'm no expert on finishing, but on the shellac scale that is pale. Orange shellac, Button polish, Garnet, they are all different. You could try a Super-Blonde dewaxed shellac.

MFT top, make one or buy in?

For anyone who likes the idea of one of these but doesn't have the space for a permanent setup, Aiden's design for a KD cutting table, subsequently modified by several people is well worth consideration: sore-hoarses-mkii-now-with-added-plans-t44761.html
