    Shooting Board Technique

I use my No5 as my go-to plane, but for shooting there is no doubt that my Veritas Low Angle Jack does a far superior job.

    Celebration of Craftsmanship

I went down today with my mate Stuart. There is some astonishing work there (as well as a couple of pieces that make me look competent and a couple of pieces that make your eyes go funny). I was delighted to see a David Savage chair there. Absolutely beautiful. Apparently the business is being...

    Hmmm. Possibly.

Disaster! Both Finca Del Mar and Big Gun, my two favourites have been DISCONTINUED! What on earth are they thinking? Very, very unhappy :(

    Any cruciverbalists ?

Well it certainly would not be Prestidigitation! Steve, Finalist, Young Magician of the Year, 1975.

    Doing up a band saw

The Throat is the horizontal distance from the blade to the frame. The distance under the guides is called the Depth of Cut.

    Any cruciverbalists ?

I've done about 75%. A couple of words I'd never heard of, though. I'll have another go at lunchtime.

    Best British Cheeses

And Stilton is not necessarily harsh. Salty, maybe, but Colston Basset or Long Clawson could never be described as harsh. Smooth and mellow. Mmmnnnn.

OK, and thanks and all that, but bear in mind I need to be able to buy it without making a 400 mile round trip...

    Wedged Tenons: Inside or Outside

The reason I don't think it matters from a strength point of view is that modern glues are so good that mechanical strength is less critical than it used to be. A saw-cut wedge creates a dovetail tenon, and thus a more mechanical joint. A side-wedged tenon sounds inferior, but it is all...

    Doing up a band saw

That looks quite a find! It's a 3-wheeler, but it looks larger than the Burgess, which is the more common one. What diameter are the those wheels? And what is the throat? 3-wheelers have a bigger throat for the size of the wheel, compared to their 2-wheel cousins, but the downside is that the...

help needed with DeWalt band saw

Yes, just replace the bearings. They are cheap to replace. You might have difficulty finding a small enough bearing-puller though. A length of dowel (broom-handle) and a hammer might be a necessary Heath Robinson solution.

    Wedged Tenons: Inside or Outside

I think that both ways are fine. Decoratively, for furniture, I prefer the saw-cut. However, when I go the saw-cut-in-the-tenon route, I drill a little hole in the end of the saw-cut, which prevents the cut propagating into a split.

Thanks for all the suggestions, chaps. Chatsworth is doable, but, as you say, pricey. There is also a decent farm shop on the Dukeries estate near Worksop. There is a specialist cheese shop in Nottingham, but I have to psych myself up to go back. I'll let you know what I get :)

I've just been Googling reviews of Stinking Bishop. I'm not sure I'm up to that myself, let alone inflicting it on a pal. And what about the Airport Dogs? I wouldn't want anything adverse to happen to them. S

Ah, now that's interesting. I don't like the digestive base, too sweet for me, but the water biscuit, yes, spot on. But with VERY salted butter, I like the Normandy stuff that grits your teeth, (though it's gone up in price 50% over the last 3 years :( )

I've never thought of Brie, Somerset or France, as "stinky", on the contrary, fairly mild and benign. It's not something I buy very often, though. I have nothing against DG, but surely it's in the same basket as Cheddar, and they do have cheddar over there. Yes, I know there is Cheddar and...
