No longer remotely Shaker(ish) dining table

I lost some footage when I laid my garden path :(, but here is a mish-mash of what I've been able to salvage. I hope it shows the thought processes and challenges I overcame. Enjoy!

    Baffled by bandsaw

LOL! Yes, a coarser blade will make ripping easier as will a wider blade, assuming that the saw is big enough and strong enough to tension it. Skewing the fence, as he has done, will, as you can see, "solve" the problem - for ripping. But you try crosscutting with the mitre fence or using any...

    Importance of safety

The ones I linked to never fog up for me.

    Importance of safety

BTW, if you buy prescription ones, make sure that they are not bifocals (unless that is what you want, of course). I ordered some thinking they were full lens, only to find they were bifocals. No mention of that in the product description. These are the ones I use. Recommended.

    Importance of safety

My corneas used to belong to rwo other people. I am very grateful for their generosity and I take great care not to abuse their gifts. I wear a pair of safety specs round my neck all the time, +1.5 or +2.0 depending on what I'm doing. I don't care if it does look a bit poncy, they are always...

No longer remotely Shaker(ish) dining table

I was inspired by Doctor Bob: When I put the first coat on, I thought to myself, "Steve, what on earth have you done?" But now, 6 or 8 coats later, I've lost count, it's beginning to grow on me. And in the dining room, in the shade of the top, it looks darker and much less green anyway. I...

No longer remotely Shaker(ish) dining table

I gave the base a coat of primer and then several coats of eggshell. It's not easy getting a flawless finish and mine most certainly isn't. but the bits that are seen are OK. Not great, but OK. I'd need to hire Doctor Bob's painters to get what I'd actually like. There was enough wood left...

    Baffled by bandsaw

My, admittedly very limited, experience of shared community workshops is that there are people who know what they are doing and there are people who do not. It's not always the "knowers" who get to be in charge of the machinery. Seniority of tenure is not a proxy for competence...

    Strong colour

That looks very nice. Obviously so expensive there was no money left for a loo seat! :) I do wonder with those slipper baths, though, does the person who chose them have to clean around them?

Sadly, even though there is still no stock, the price has gone up to £22 :(

    Baffled by bandsaw

I'm afraid I disagree. The tracking knob is there for a reason, it alters the position of the blade on the tyre. Too far back and the blade will be in the 11-5-o'clock direction (looking from above), too far forward and it will be in the 1-7-o'clock direction. Somewhere between the two it will...

This is how I cut tenons on a bandsaw – well it works for me.

Usibng a spacer is a good idea, but there are challenges, especially if you use different blades. It doesn't take much of a change in kerf for a joint to go from Right to Too Loose/Tight. I, too, use spacers, but my spacers are the exact size of the mortice, so I have a carefully-made set of...

    flat bottomed 25mm hole

I'd just use an ordinary router bit with bottom cut, a guide bush and a template. I'd have to do a bit of maths for the right diameters, but it's a bit early in the day for that :) S

    Making concave drawer front fingergrips.

I don't have such a cutter, but I would use something like this with a guide bush: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1EfdEvb3nBKNjSZFMq6yUSFXaC/LAVIE-1pc-12mm-1-2-Shank-1-3-4-Wide-Small-Bowl-Router-Bit-1-65.jpg

Bear in mind that small saws cannot tension wide blades very well, there is not enough rigidity in the frame. The 3401 that STWW mentions above (which was also my first BS - nice little machine, wish I still had it) will do 1/2" max, even though the wheels themselves are considerably wider. OK...

Irwin XP Heavy Duty Bar Clamp - £12.50 (Back in stock)

That is a very good price, no wonder they are so ephemeral. Heads up, if you get the Wickes trade app, you get a decent discount.

    AndyT`s Bench.Talk.101 now on YouTube

Touché! :) 👏👏 Seriously though, I see some online stuff that is presented with subtitles, where the subtitles are perfectly reasonable English (well, American, anyway) but they are not what is actually spoken. I saw one the other day. It was a perfectly understandable error, but inaccurate...
