To (ol) well or not to (ol) well? That is the question

I assume so too. Unfortunately it has sled feet, it's not as straightforward as cutting an inch off.

To (ol) well or not to (ol) well? That is the question

That s all very helpful. Thanks, chaps. Not actually what I was expecting. I'll tell you what I am considering. My exiting bench is a Roubo style, one solid top on a frame of two end frames joined by a pair of stretchers. No apron. It is fairly rigid, but now I am on a wooden floor, not as...

To (ol) well or not to (ol) well? That is the question

Me too, Andy, me too. If you've seen any of my videos you will know my that workshop is not exactly clinical :) But I am better - much better, actually - at keeping my bench clear than I used to be. The floor is the next challenge... I remember Pete Maddex coming over and commenting that he'd...

To (ol) well or not to (ol) well? That is the question

Perhaps I should point out that I have never had a bench with a tool well. I can see their advantages of stopping tools from getting underneath the workpiece, but I can also see that they may be nothing more than a magnet for detritus. I really am in two minds. What are your experiences of...

To (ol) well or not to (ol) well? That is the question

Ok, I know I'm likely to be opening a can of worms that will make any sharpening thread seem as benign as "How do you do?", but here goes. I made what I thought was my lifetime bench about 20-odd years ago. It has served me well. But. I bought a load of beech from Harry Adcock's. The place...

    Domino Size Advice

I agree. I would use 8mm Dominoes, two of them. The nice thing about Domino joinery is that you are not actually restricted to the standard widths. It is easy to merge a couple of slots together to make a wide one and then mill your own tenon material to suit. I even have aWaggleometer (TM)* to...

Thanks Andy (and W2S), I'd missed that. He is amazing, really, it's just one long take, very few cuts, no umming and ahhing, very well prepared with the Blue Peter* bits. He always seems to have bloodied fingers though! :) You won't be surprised to know that I am considering a more mechanical...

Andy, I can't find what you are referring to. Can you give me a link please? Ta. S

Yes I did, Mike :) The problem with that is that I would have three open dovetails slots on view, which I don't want. S

I know you know what you meant :) I've just spent a couple of very productive hours with my mate Dave who Knows All Things SketchUp. This is where I am at the moment. I know Jacob wants me to get rid of the rail, but I don't want two tripods. I haven't drawn it in, but I think a stainless...

Oops! Haven't got my eyes in yet, I can't see what I am typing. Fixed.

Ok, Robbo, it's yours. PM me your address. Glad I've not got to chuck it away.

    Table saw blade reducing rings.

As long as the reducers are not so thick that they prevent the flange plate from tightening on the blade, then you will be fine. That is only a risk if the blades are Thin Kerf and the reducers are not. Reducers work fine, they are just a bit of a pain if they don't hold in place very well when...

Hey! Aidan! Where have you been?! Nice of you to drop in. Do it more often. I think that a couple of discrete plates would be a good idea, and I would make sure that they are also discreet. :)

I'm afraid I don't understand you, Pete, and I'd like to do so. Ah yes, the penny has just dropped whilst typing this. I get what you are suggesting, I think, but the more I add at the top, the heavier it is, and, just as importantly, the higher the Centre of Gravity. I'll have a play in SU. S

I've just been down to take the clamps off and scrape the glue. The glue line is perfect, but the top is not flat. It's a bit crowned at one end. Not by much, 1-2mm over its width at the most, but I was hoping for skating rink flat. It is, at the other end. We'll see how it settles. I think that...

Right, where were we before we got side-tracked? Ah yes, improving on nature. There are a couple of places where the balance of pippiness is not as good as I would like, such as here: So I rough cut a little patch from some waste and I think it will improve things a bit. But it's a...

Well, when so many experienced people, whose opinions I (normally! :D ) respect tell me I'm wrong, I should listen. So I've beefed it up at both ends, The leg is now 25mm taller at the dovetail end and the top rails are now 95mm deep, set as a bridle joint. What do you think? Click to enlarge:

Thank you. The column I have drawn is 95mm diameter at the bottom, the dovetails can be anything up to 30mm long. I have another design in my head. I might draw it up and see if floats my boat more. That Moser table seemed sturdy enough. Those end structures were ex-2". 45mm I suppose. The...

The trouble with that is that I really don't like it. I might have to re-think this :(
