    Fixing a marking gauge

That looks quite a nice thumbscrew. Where did you find that?

If I dip these in some hormone rooting powder, with they take and become rootstocks themselves?

    (Mis)Adventures in the kitchen

About a year ago I treated myself to a Smoking and Curing course with Steve Lamb from River Cottage. It was excellent. I've done a bit a bit of smoking and I have about 5 chunks of wannabe prosciutto hanging up in the workshop in varying stages of air drying. The first should be ready by...

    Grafting fruit trees

Well I've been and gone and done it. I bought a quince "Serbian Gold" a few weeks ago and planted it in the garden. It has taken nicely and has new growth on it. Today I took the Red Williams* scions from the chiller. They look all right, still dormant, not got rusty or mouldy or anything. I...

Barrel nuts are fine, but I don't think I've ever seen one as big as M12 (1/2" to you, I think :) ) That doesn't men they don't exist, and I don't think I've ever actually looked for one, either.

    Steve's workbench build

Thanks Doug. That looks quicker than my way, though I don't think you have as much bolt length as I have. Is that bolt stainless? For the lsat couple of beds I have made I have embedded a stainless steel nut inthe leg of the bed and veneered over it. I can re-saw a piece to give me, say, two 4mm...

Have you got a picture, Doug?

    Steve's workbench build

I want this to be knock-down, Mike. Whilst I don't expect I shall ever have to dismantle it, someone, someday, will. The dominoes are just loose. They could just as well be dowels, but doms are easier to line up. Those mortices are only 30mm deep. They are just to keep the rail oriented...

So apart front cleaning up the arisses and sanding, etc, the long rails are done.

    Steve's workbench build

It's time to sort out the long rails, or stretchers if you prefer. I'm going to bolt them from the offside of the leg frames, using 200x12mm bolts. The nut will be inside the rail, so I need a straight hole for the bolt and a cavity at the end of it for the nut. I could try drilling a long...

    Bartering goods, skills, time, etc.

They've come out a funny colour but: Those pictures make it look rusty. It's not, not at all. I seasoned it with olive oil and baked it at 240C for 40 minutes. It has a lovely patina. I'm just disappointed that I already have a batch in the freezer, I want to get on and use it.

    Bartering goods, skills, time, etc.

Well today was the day. Megan turned up properly equipped, full-face mask, ear defenders, boiler suit, rigger boots and leather apron! 10/10. We routed a perfectly round disk of ash and made a sample Shaker-style frame and panel door. Lots to learn about depth of cut, cutter direction...

    King tut

Holy Sarcophagi! Pete, if that is what came to mind when you read this thread, there is something seriously wrong with you.

    Cascamite glue

That's a lot of money and a lot of glue. I know some people decant into smaller quantities in ziploc bags, but has anyone tried keeping it in the freezer as well?

    Cascamite glue

That is good to hear. I've just glued up the end-frame legs for my new bench. I would have used Cascamite, but for this thread. Instead I've use Everbuild D4. Good glue, just not the leisurely open time.

    japanese saw.

Certainly not all "Japanese" saws are made equal. I have never been one for nicknacks or ornaments. But when I do go on holiday, if I can, I bring back something useful by which to remember the trip. Often it is kitchen related (last year I went to Maine and brought back a cast iron...

    Kitchen Carcass

I'm no expert, but I gather that the problem with the Ikea ones is that they have very little, if any, void at the back for pipework and services. The best carcases that I have seen, by a country mile, are made just round the corner from me by Kesseler. They are M&T'd not cam & dowel. Everything...
