    Robert Wearing, 1921 - 2020 R.I.P.

I certainly owe him a debt of gratitude. It is from him that I learned the value of jigs, and that was the mainstay of my writing career, really. 99 - good innings, Bob. Good job.

Why safety goggles are important ....

It's only on the left there because that is a bevel rip cut. It's normally on the right and the aux shoe is not required then.

Why safety goggles are important ....

I'd call that a crown guard. SUVA is, I believe, an acronym for a Swiss insurance company, who approve the design. This is mine: In this picture I have the fence on the left so that the blade is tilting away. On the fence is a shoe (not easy to see as it is clear) and that normally supports...

Why safety goggles are important ....

No, the SUVA is mounted on a boom arm from the far RH corner. It is supported by a shoe on the fence. I also have a shoe which clamps in the mitre slot for when I'm not using the fence (or using it to the left of the blade, such as when bevelling). I never do anything without some sort of...

Why safety goggles are important ....

I wouldn't use that guard for ripping, Roger. I have my SUVA-style guard for that. This one is for the other cuts where I can't use the SUVA. It's usually when I'm using some kind of jig or fixture where the SUVA gets in the way.

    Ceiling for workshop

Personally I think that 10mm of polystyrene will have virtually no effect whatsoever.

Why safety goggles are important ....

Which is why, when I can't use my normal crown guard, I use a magnetic stand-alone guard which prevents that sort of event, whilst still allowing me to make the cut. Glad it wasn't worse.

    Mitre lock bit

T, I've not measured it but it is as big as my aperture will allow, so >2". It's a big bit.

    Mitre lock bit

Thank you all. Maybe I'll try upping the speed a bit and see if that helps, but so far I'm not happy. I like to feel safe and I don't. If it doesn't get any better I shall just make a simple T&G joint.

    Mitre lock bit

Thank you, but that info does not help me, well-intentioned though it was :) I am wondering if I have reduced the spindle speed too much. It's down to minimum, but I can't imagine having a bigger bit in the machine, so I am reluctant to wind it up. It's a brand new bit, so I can't see...

    Mitre lock bit

Has anyone here had good results with a mitre lock bit? I have a couple, not used either in anger. I have renovated one of my garden planters. It needs new fake lega. They are made frome two pieces of 4x1 mitred along a long edge and stuck on over the corner of a posh crate. I have anew mitre...

What's the difference between "Trade" and other paint?

That's very good going Phil, can't argue with that. Mine were done 4 years ago. It's fine high up under the overhang, but weathering a bit lower down.

What's the difference between "Trade" and other paint?

My guess is that "Liquid Gloss" is oil-based. "Quick-drying" will be Acrylic water-based. Personally I always use Johnstone's paint. Excellent stuff. Unfortunately the store is currently closed. The front of my workshop could do with a coat, it gets the sun all day long.

What's the difference between "Trade" and other paint?

Well "Once" is the number of times you buy it. S

    Trump and bleach

I do not disagree. We have the same flawed system over here, actually. I can't remember if it was Wilson or Heath, but I believe one of them became PM after winning fewer votes than the other. It is quite possible because of the constituency system. It doesn't make it right, of course.

    Trump and bleach

At least we know that Trump does not have hemorrhoids. He is a perfect as..... It really beggars belief that out of a population of 300000000, it came down to a choice between Trump and Clinton, and even then the one with fewer votes actually won. Totally bizarre.

    Having fun with cherry

He needs a painted-on moustache and eyebrows! :) I've also had fun with cherry today, but at the other end of the life-cycle. I've planted a CHerry Stella. I'd post a pic but for some reason I can't get it off my phone :(

Just Six Numbers, by Lord Martin Rees. Fermat's Last Theorem, by Simon Singh. Both mathematical subjects for non-mathematicians. Very good.

Ruobo style bench in Teak I think, What finish?

Yes, I am delighted with it. It's the best bench I've ever owned. BLO rubbed on with a rag, left 10 mins, rubbed off again.
