    Angle grinder guard swap

@mwinfrance - wow! I don't think I'll ever have that level of usage! I have 2 drills on the go sometimes (actually I think I used 3 at once on one occasion). That's likely to be my limit. @bourbon - That is far too sensible. I knew the size but bought them in a spirit of enquiry, as it would be...

    Angle grinder guard swap

The no load speed for the 115 and 125 versions of the grinder is 10500 rpm. I think (without looking) the disks are rated to 12000 rpm. So that's a non-issue. I'm seriously wondering if the only difference between them is the guard size. The big advantage with the Lidl disks is they sell mixed...

    Angle grinder guard swap

Very good point. Wish I'd thought of that!

    Angle grinder guard swap

The guards are highly variable in price. Cheap generic one starts about £4 I think. Proper Metabo ones some are selling them about £7 but they go all the way up to £30 or £40 for the same thing (well, I didn't look too closely to see if they are all the tool-less guard). Crazy. But they are not...

    Angle grinder guard swap

I have a Metabo W9 115 Quick angle grinder (last year's birthday present), which is a delight to use, however wanting to take advantage of the grinder disks they have in Lidl, I'm not so delighted because they are next size up! I got some dished ones anyway since they would sit in the wider part...

    HDPE inside computer monitors.

I have a sheet that came from a TV. Pretty sure it's acrylic. HDPE isn't clear. FYI it acts as a light-pipe to evenly distribute the backlight over the screen. That pattern is a very small version of prismatic glass.

What are the definitive smells of the 70s?

I was a kid back then, so smells of the '70's is largely synonymous with smells of childhood. My Grandpa's home-grown and home cured pipe tobacco, and the leaves when he rolled them up to go in the cutter, smelt unlike the finished product. The smells of his workshop, oil, rust and sawdust...

After a Budget square that’s accurate

The Record one I got 20 years ago is still accurate despite having been dropped a few times. I test it regularly. Got a set of 3 Parkside ones a couple of years back. Not used much but I think they might be slightly better than the Record (so far)

Which type of bearing to use?

I'd take a punt on the one in the photo being a machined pin that's completely smooth. You can see 1 grub screw in the photo. I'd think it was fixed solid somehow into the lower half of the middle section, which is how they get minimal play, combined with a precise fit. Then the top arm grub...

Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

I'd do a wide and a narrow, and put the narrow one at the front (foreshortening). Depends on how your joint looks really though. If the rack is permanently full it won't matter so much anyway 🐱

running a screw backwards instead of predrilling?

That's bonkers! (And on the hammering note, a good whack or so to start off (if not drilling) works pretty well. No wandering pilot holes)

    How to insulate this wall?

Hadn't heard of R values - but it is thermal resistance, which I do understand! Garage door is pretty un-gappy - certainly no howling gale there. It would stand also being insulated though. @bignik - I think the problem would be volume. It's quite a lot of stuff to find. Well, looks like...

    How to insulate this wall?

Did they put this on the bedroom side or the garage side? In my case it wouldn't be suitable on the garage side because I need to attach stuff to it...

    How to insulate this wall?

    It's true. I couldn't spell "Frobscottle" :D

    How to insulate this wall?

Sounds like a plan. I did wonder about diminishing returns of thickness, but no idea of a baseline to even think about that. I'll go from there.

    How to insulate this wall?

Ok that's two things I'd never heard of. But Rockwool slabs are sold more for acoustic insulation? Need to cover about 12sqM - what's going to give me the most bang for my buck? Prices all look pretty similar between the types...

    How to insulate this wall?

Ooohh - I'd better not grind any angles near it then! Or is this special housing grade stuff?

    How to insulate this wall?

Bought last year, my 1970's built house has an attached garage. Now discovering the garage is a source of coldness. Dividing walls are single brick, bare on the garage side, plasterboard on the house side. I'd like to make the walls be more insulated, by attaching something to the garage side...
