Arguing with the car insurance company

i had a crash (my fault) in 2002. Car was previously in very good condition and 3 years old. Insurance co offered me £5000. I then checked autotrader and identified that the cheapest like for like comparable car was £6500. So i offered them the option of purchasing a comparable replacement, or...

    Forstener Bit recommendations please

I've got a couple of the axcaliber ones from axi and they are very good. Also blagged a set from record power at the Newark show. Great price for a set (£55 show or £65 on RP website), first impressions - not as good as the Axcaliber ones.

    Buying tools near Harrogate

Another +1 for Duffield. I was there on saturday, bit disappointed to see they have stopped stocking beech in the retail shed. If you want any you need to order it for collection a couple of days before hand.

Mechanical Pencil suggestion for marking out?

I previously used a SN 2h pencil, but have recently started using one of these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1 I bought yellow because it's easy to spot on the bench when i put it down. I use this for roughing out pieces, but use a knife for accuracy.

Any Cheap & Decent NEW LA block plane which you can buy?

I bought an axminster rider one recently - seems good to me. this one https://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-r ... ane-506557 They occasionally have them @ half price on their outlet sites. They say they have cosmetic damage and just need a fettle. I was a bit impatient too so ended up buying...

    Keeping warm

I'm in the north, so I'm thinking about putting a jumper on ;-) On a serious note, i would get some base layers from Mountain Warehouse or other outdoor type shop. You'll be amazed the difference they make to keeping your core temp up. Base layer, shirt and a micro fleece is usually all i...

    Thicker plane Irons

Well back to my original problem. When i took the vernier to the blades there was 1.2mm difference in thickness. So taking the advice offered here, i removed ~1mm from the mouth. This worked out fine, the thicker blade dropped in nicely and worked great. Can i tell the difference between a new...

    Thicker plane Irons

Thanks Pete, this was the conclusion i was coming to, but wanted to seek advice before i committed to an unrecoverable course of action. What degree of success do others have when widening the mouth of planes to accommodate a thicker iron?

    Thicker plane Irons

Hi, I've got 3 stanley planes, two second hand, 1 new and thought it would be a good idea to get some new irons for these. The most recent acquisition (a 5 1/2) had a pretty poor iron, and that prompted me to buy some axminster replacement blades. The no4 i have has a decent iron, but a new one...

    Choosing a 7" vise

I bought the "Spear and Jackson" 9" vice off amazon - about 80 quid and brand new. Had it 4 months (replacing a cheap 7" vice) and it is perfect in my view . There is a 7" version for a few quid less. was very tempted by an old record in ebay but it went for £70 - so too much hassle to refurb...

Was i being greedy? - router table advice

All a little immaterial - as per my OP, the shank was fully inserted into the collet. While there could be some minor variation, all from the same board, about 2' long. The wealden solid carbide bit did feel much better and provided a much cleaner cut. I will do a test later in the week...

Was i being greedy? - router table advice

Thanks Phil and Custard Yes the router was at full speed. I would never have known about the timber cooling the bit Custard, I would have thought going faster / too fast would cause the issue. i.e. was i exerting too much lateral pressure on the bit. I have to say the wealden solid carbide...
