    I have in the past used what you refer to as flimsy junk from toolstation without problem but they have recently reduced the range of lengths they do. The only place I have seen good quality longer lengths of late is jewsons.

    I usually get on alright in my unheated workshop with thermal overalls a work jacket and a hat but today it is so cold in there that I haven't bothered.

    It is that simple. Just create a flat edge at 90 deg to a flat side on the planer and just run the other two sides through the thicknesser.
