    Do any of you sharpen your own planer/thicknesses blades? How?

    I disagree that the HSE regulations are a bad thing. I adhere to those rules without having to compromise on anything. Basically it’s just like having to adhere to the Highway Code when driving a car, it’s second nature. Do you need to sharpen planer knives to 2000 grit?

    I was taught that the knives should be done as a matched pair to avoid vibration and imbalance. I’ve never attempted to do them myself as I don’t believe it’s safe, and if HSE were called I’d be in big trouble if an accident were caused because of this. All you need is two pairs of knives...

    Aren’t the knives ground unevenly like this, leading to weight differences, tapers and vibration when reinstalled?

    If you’re on the Makita 18v platform they do a great inflator, I’ve used it up to 110 psi with no problems.

    Cheap fix for that is a washer. Although would be a bit of a pain come sharpening time.

    That’s the correct way to set your knives, it can be ridiculously frustrating at times but it does work.

    You need to set your knives with a straight edge, but not how you’re describing. It’s difficult to explain on here, but this video gives you an idea of how it should be done.
