    Hydraulic bench

I’ve made three of them at work, just remove the top and replace with a 3/4 or 1” mdf and put a vice on it. Surprisingly sturdy and extremely convenient. The problem with converting a hospital bed is that the underside is much larger and doesn’t allow for knee and foot space should you want to...

    Improved hand tool myth.

I’d still choose the hand plane, chisel and router plane method. Less noise and mess if you’re working in someone’s house. How’s that cordless router going to sink hinge recesses in rebated casings?

    Improved hand tool myth.

Flush hinges and European hinges are used because sinking a butt hinge takes a lot of skill whereas the other two don’t.

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Not even a lead on the latch/lock side?

    Air rifle stock finishes

I messed around with air rifles as a teenager, I seem to remember you’d use stuff called gunstock oil.

    Fixing door lining gaps...

The reason you plane the door to suit is that it’s really difficult getting that lining correct, and almost impossible not to if you want that aesthetically pleasing parallel gap. And believe it or not, the lining could be all manner of shapes, but as long as that gap’s planed parallel you won’t...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

You’ve made the linings too wide, you’ve not factored in your ability to fit the lining parallel, free of twist, plumb and the header level( it’s harder than you think). It leaves you no fitting space with the door. I’d always prefer a slightly tight lining/frame so I can plane a tight gap...

What kind of woodworker are you?

Time served Carpenter and Joiner, still earning a living in woodworking but not what I started out as.

    £10

I doubt it, the car park’s free and no surgery takes place there.

I work for the NHS, some beautiful cars in the car park…

Hand planing hardwood - bad idea?

    Yes, it’s always that hard.

    Gout 😥

I had my first bout of gout in 2020 during lockdown. I’d finished my bottle of omega 3 capsules and had purchased another. After a couple of days on this new batch I had this swollen and very painful left big toe. Anyway, I worked out what the cause was, stopped taking the omega 3 and the pain...

    Record Power BSD250 drive belt

I’m not that familiar with engineering stuff to be honest, but I did look at some pulleys on eBay this afternoon after reading your post. The only problem I see is that two pulleys and belt would probably cost more than the £28 for the Record belt.

    Record Power BSD250 drive belt

The guy I spoke to at Record Power sounded pretty genuine and said they’d tried unsuccessfully to source from a few European companies. I can find one at 284mm long, 20mm wide and 8mm pitch but the teeth are a different rounded profile. The Record Power belt has very shallow square teeth.

    Record Power BSD250 drive belt

Haha, I typed in Bas tard but it’s morphed in turnip 😂

    Record Power BSD250 drive belt

I’ve been in contact with Record Power and this belt is a ******* fit and isn’t available elsewhere. They’re currently out of stock but expected 28/02/22. I’ve ordered one ☝️ the cracked existing one lasts that long.

    Chisels, new or old

I’ve had a look and I must have thrown out the plastic wallet as they’re all in a drawer in a tool box I made as an apprentice. They’re unused but I’ve decided they’re too nice to sell. I also found an unused 1 1/2” Robert Sorby paring chisel that’s also unused. That’s something I’d consider...

Kickback and circle marks when using router sled with new flattening bit

Probably too much depth and direction of cut. A sharp hand plane would be just as quick, produce less noise and be healthier for you.

    Chisels, new or old

I’ve an unused set of four unused Marples boxwood carver handled bevel edged chisels in their wallet I purchased around 1986 at home. I always felt they were too good to use for work so never did. I’ve plenty of chisels so they’re going on eBay the next time I get the 80% email.
