    Paul, his version of sharpening

Not quite the same comparison in my opinion.

    Paul, his version of sharpening

I disagree, it takes a lot of skill to use a machine correctly.

    Paul, his version of sharpening

What’s different between hand tool knowledge and understanding and machine knowledge and understanding?

    Paul, his version of sharpening

I disagree, I’ve seen some awful machine cut dovetails on various forums.

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

Similar to what we were issued for around £55 in 1984, except we were given a No5 Handyman. That being said, I was a clueless 16 year old apprentice and that Handyman was was more than acceptable for my skill level for a few years till I knew what was what. In fact, I’ve still got the Handyman...

    Paul, his version of sharpening

This type of talk isn’t welcome on a woodworking forum, if I wanted to read about someone’s ‘Odious Personality’ I’d take a dive down into the dregs of Twitter!

    Thanks, I’ll have a a look at Dictum 👍

    Nobex Mitre Saw Blades

Thanks, but both the UK sellers are sold out and I’d never get the overseas order past the purchasing department. It’s all really odd as Nobex are/were a big brand.

    Nobex Mitre Saw Blades

I’m after a few 630mm 18tpi Nobex Proman blades. Unfortunately Axminster are sold out and unlikely to get stock and Nobex seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Anyone know where to buy these blades or different branded ones?

    Paul, his version of sharpening

It’s probably because he’s times served and knows what he’s talking about, quite rare amongst these so called experts.

    Foot switch for lathe safety?

Where I work both lathes (one’s an ML8) have NVR switches for switching on and off, and a foot switch in case of emergencies.

    Laser levels

If you’re running a long line with a level it’s good practice to flip the level end on end to cancel out any discrepancies.

    Dewalt 1751 Radial Arm Saw

I wouldn’t use that machine to rip. Although it’s designed to and shows you in the instructions, it’s a practice now outlawed by Health and Safety.

    Erbauer EOS450 or Metabo SXE450

It’ll tell you the M/S2 in the spec sheet in the instructions or on the website.

    Erbauer EOS450 or Metabo SXE450

I did the HAV stats for our power tools at work in 2021. What surprised me was the difference in vibration levels between Erbauer and the higher end Makita and Bosch sanders. The Erbauer Random Orbit sander was so high I’ve taken it out use.

Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

Three equal width boards for me every time, a wide and narrow board just wouldn’t look correct, especially with Ash’ bold grain pattern. It’ll also make it easier on assembling the carcass as you won’t have to worry about aligning the wide boards together.

What have I done wrong? Carcass not square

You need to measure diagonals as a square won’t give you a true representation of squareness. You also need to make sure your level spans the two corners and not the sagging middle of the cabinet, as that also won’t give you a correct reference. You also need a false top on that cabinet as it...

    Hydraulic bench

All cloth backed chairs are now being replaced with vinyl wipeable ones. Anything showing rust that’s used in a clinical area will also get skipped.

    Hydraulic bench

Yours isn’t a hospital bed, it’s a therapy plinth or treatment table and perfect for this kind of job. Sadly these type of tables aren’t allowed to be repaired unless done by the manufacturer so they end up being skipped once something goes wrong.
