Advice please on a 125mm orbital sander (corded)

Random Orbit sanders will slow down if you press them hard as they’re not directly driven by the motor like an angle grinder. A random orbit sander works best with only its own weight as pressure, press down and it’s less effective. If you are going to purchase a new machine please have a look...

    Crown Guard Extraction

This is the modification done on our crown guard at work done by P&J Dust Extraction when we had our system fitted. There’s also an extraction point below the saw through a 100mm pipe. We’ve just had our yearly Dust Extraction test, so working perfectly.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

You just purchased a new India Norton if it had gone too far, either combination or same both sides, that was it 😂

    New Planer Thicknesser

We might be securing funding at our workplace to replace our 37 year old two knife cutterblock Startrite PT260 planer thicknesser, as it’s just failed the H&S noise test, plus if it ever breaks down I doubt we’ll get parts. I’ve narrowed it down to the Sedgwick PT255 with a spiral cutterblock...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I bought a set of four Marples Shatterproof handled bevel edged chisels when I was 16, and later on a bench grinder. I blued each one trying to grind them back 😩

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

It definitely wasn’t something you could leave to do whilst having a coffee. You’re right, the smell was very distinct.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

There was one in our Woodworking workshop at school and the machine room at Technical College. The stones were quite coarse though and used only to grind out any damage before sharpening on an oilstone, maybe other grades were available.

    TALLOW!!!

One of the Instructors at Technical College would always reference tallow when talking about brass screws. He’d dip the screw in tallow before driving them in, l think there was another reason as well as lubrication but it escapes me.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

The Tormek will give you a razor sharp edge if you grade the wheel with the fine side. Just touch up the 30 degree sharpening edge then strop on the leather. I've adapted mine both at home and at work to have two guide bars, one for the grinding wheel and one for the leather wheel. This way...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

Maybe so, but in the real world you might need to resharpen your plane two, three or even four times a day dependent on material used, that’s a lot of accumulated time to lose.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

The sharpening is always secondary to the making, hence the quick repeatable results so you can get back the job in hand.

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I see people on Reddit and other platforms with an incredible array of tools, expensive sharpening kit and yet their work’s basic and in most cases poor. People spending so much time reaching this level of sharpness going up through umpteen grits and various bevels, and yet, their work’s basic...

    Fitting knob to mortice latch.

You need to tighten them all a bit at a time rather than one fully then the next.

Speeding up sanding process (seeking advice)

I doubt any joinery shops would allow that, non staff using their equipment probably invalidates any insurance, H&S if not trained on the machine, cost of a belt/belts and time to replace, all sorts of issues.

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

They're great for applications that won't be seen, a surprisingly strong joint as well.

    G Clamps

We use these at work and have the added advantage that you can also squeeze them open, so perfect for one handed use. Some are probably twenty years old, used daily and still working perfectly. EHZ "PRO" One-Hand Clamp | One-Hand Clamps | Clamps | Hand Tools | Products | Wolfcraft Site

How to pare tenons plumb and square

Use a bandsaw. Cut the tenons roughly 1mm too thick, then cut the shoulders. Clamp a piece of square ended timber to the bandsaw table so it’s touching the blade, just behind the teeth and square to the blade. Now your bandsaw will take a half kerf skim cut as the blade won’t have anywhere to go...

    Soldering broken bandsaw blades

Bandsaw blades are cheap enough to replace and if the weld has gone the blade’s usually shot.

    bandsaw blades

We use Axminster Axcaliber at work, the bimetal are extremely good and last a long time but pricey, the GT line also very good.
