What's the biggest mistake you have made in your woodworking

The skill is always making the mistake look like it was supposed to be there 😀

NVR or Foot switch on router table

This is definitely bad advice, a NVR switch is a must and is required by law in industry.

Travelling to the US - what would you buy

Lie Nielsen block plane or a naked cordless item.

What's the biggest mistake you have made in your woodworking

I was hanging flush doors on a new housing estate and accidentally scored the cut line with Stanley knife on the top of the door instead of the bottom 🤦‍♂️

    Auger bit file recommendation

I prefer to use a flat needle file with a safe edge.

    Table saw safety

I work in a sort of similar situation and the only persons responsible for those machines are myself and my colleagues. Any accidents that happens when non employees use machines are our fault, we are solely responsible. Your friend needs to be made aware of this as well as the people under his...

    Tormek honing diamond bit

Have a search for one of these. I’ve got both versions and although the newer variant is a lot better the original still does the job https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tormek-diamond-truing-tool-/115198114120?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

    Table saw safety

I suspect the only person going to get charged for that breach of H&S is the organiser/named person, any user will be absolved of punishment as they’re unpaid and under your friend’s supervision.

Where to source wooden framing shims / wedges (UK)

I doubt slate was ever use to pack door frames and casings, in my time it was always wood. Slate was used beneath floor joists to shim them up to level and also had the benefit of not transferring moisture, being used as an early DPC before the bitumen roll came along.

    Sold SEDGWICK MORTISER.

That’s a nice machine, somebody buy it as the stuff you can buy new for £475 will be junk in comparison.

Where to source wooden framing shims / wedges (UK)

It never used to be something you could buy, we’d make our own out of offcuts and trim to thickness using a block plane. Even better were wooden pallet wedges knocked into recesses cut with a plugging chisel. The wedges had an opposing taper cut with an axe that would tighten as you knocked...

    Table saw safety

I’m going to give up giving advice about Health and Safety on this forum, hobbyists always seem to know more than the ones in the trade.

    Importance of crown guard?

PUWER regulations come under UK Health and Safely laws, it’s not an either or situation. You’re more than welcome to do anything you like at home but it’s good practice to follow industry.

    Importance of crown guard?

It means, standing to one side counts for nothing if you’ve taken off the crown guard, it’s still illegal in industry.

    Importance of crown guard?

Most people who’ve had accidents using a saw without a crown guard were also probably standing to one side and using push sticks, means absolutely nothing and contravenes UK Health and Safety laws.

Hand Saw Restoration and Re-teething of a 99p saw Completed

Thank you for that very informative post, most interesting. One thing I’m curious about is when you file the teeth I assume you’ll create a burr, is anything done about this or is it too insignificant to affect the cut?

    An old joinery shop machinery

Those are still worth a fair bit of money and there are companies like Daltons who buy and reconditioning these, send them an email. https://www.daltonswadkin.com/process/bandsaws/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhfST2Nmu9gIV0-vtCh17Iw1_EAAYASAAEgLo2vD_BwE

    traditional jig for holding doors

Things have changed a lot over the years, you’d be working for a firm and have your bag, saw horse, level and that was it, the firm supplied your power tools and anything extra had to be light and small enough to carry around, hence why these door blocks were singular and made out of a length of...

    traditional jig for holding doors

I usually put the end of my block against the door casing when I’m planning so it doesn’t move forward, how well does the Trend version resist forward thrust?
