What is the safest way to plank a small log?

Have noticed a distinct spiral in Apple trunks I've cut for turning in the past. I'd be tempted to cut it down the middle with the chainsaw then wait a bit to see what it does.

What is the safest way to plank a small log?

A sled for the bandsaw, at the most basic this could be a stout board screwed to the log opposite the first cut. Use that to get a flat surface on one side, flip the log on to that face, remove the board and start cutting slices

    Wood you believe it!

Tried and failed to read Wohllenbergs book a few years back, but if you are interested in further reading then Merlin Sheldrake's book Entangled Life is worthwhile. I'd suggest Paul Stamets' Mycelium Running but it doesn't deal much with the symbiotic side of mycorrhizae, still interesting...

    Removing a wash hand basin

Have you got inline shut off valves? If not then it might be a chance to do two jobs at once. Cut the copper, sort out the trap, refit copper with inline valve

    Removing a wash hand basin

I've shifted a blockage with a wet rag in the overflow and a vacuum cleaner nozzle on the outlet before now. Doesn't work every time but enough to be worth a try before breaking out the sledgehammer

Does it have to be in one piece?

What might this be? ... I do know, but do you?

Human ingenuity never ceases to amaze and scare me! How on earth did someone work out that flashing mirrors would attract birds? On second thoughts.. best not go there

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

What does it smell like? I've had some types of cherry with wood of that depth of colour, but I don't think the sapwood was so pale. If it has an almond/marzipan smell it could be prunus family Looks perfect for a hollow form (y)

What tool should I buy next?

As a recent convert to the track saw I'd say they are invaluable for sheet goods and the Parkside one is better than you could reasonably expect at the price. Worth taking a look at Peter Millard's videos on YouTube as he's compared a lot of them and has a great selection of beginners tutorials...

So how do I do this?

+1 for the joggle stick. Used one to fit out my campervan build and it did the job a treat. Any shape with a point will do as long as you can tell the two sides apart

    Sawn timber Hampshire?

There was a small owner-run place in Alton that was good, but as we moved 12 years ago they could be long gone. Otherwise I would sometimes go down to WL West, but it's a bit of a trek

One landscaping company I worked for had an apprentice who weighed less than a 3x2 slab

Grab a copy of this for some good information https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/156138910961?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=erlIuCGxRw-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=_XwgzqajSc-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY and get as thin a blade as you can for your bandsaw then have a play. I'd happily...

    Garden fence replacement....

If the posts are in good condition I would measure the gap very carefully and compare a few fence panels as it is often possible to 'pop' a panel in with careful bending. Bending can be made easier by removing the top and bottom rail on one side only. Second option is feather edge board and...

    Hidden magnets for cabinet doors.

A call to the people at first4magnets would be my first step. They do a wide range of screw through neodymium magnets which should do the job
