    FTAGH Wood turning magazines

If anyone would find these useful you are welcome to collect them near Moreton in Marsh. Pretty much full years from 2010 to 2017.

This bit of timber was bent, split and rotted....

If you look up Ailanthus altissima it appears it is prone to a lot of movement whilst drying and can cause contact dermatitis. I think it is in the same family as Sumac, the sap of which can cause severe blisters and photosensitivity (speaking from experience there)

    Bulb Energy has gone pop

But is that any different from being run for the benefit of shareholders and foreign private equity firms?

    Recommendations for a can opener

Used to have one of these in a commercial kitchen. Very heavy to lift up, need to be pushed down quite hard into the can, and can bind in the bench mount if not we'll maintained. I'd probably go for the Kenwood one too.

    Ray Keys style smock?

https://thesmockshop.com/product/no-pocket-smock/ Not exactly like the pic posted but looks good, seems they make them too so might be worth an email

    Bulb Energy has gone pop

I think in Bulb's case it was pursuing on overly ambitious expansion plan without enough investment. There were rumblings back in the summer that the company was badly placed after moving into US markets.

    Marrison system Instructions.

Just a guess but it looks like they align to the centre of the disc so you can reference for different board thicknesses.

    Rats in the garden

Rats are incredibly wary of anything new so I've found that if using traps bait them but leave them unset for a few days, replenish the bait daily. Once they get used to the trap as a food source then start setting it. You should probably be tethering the traps just in case. Bait boxes with...

    Identify my 🪵

Willow. Probably salix caprea, there should be a bit of stringiness to the bast layer below the bark if it is.

Tool marks or just the wood?

Sometimes get this, it looks like tiny bits of end grain are being plucked out rather than cut. Give it a coat of sanding sealer then a very light cut with a freshly sharpened tool.

    Record cl lathes

I can only echo what's been said above, I used to have an old green CL lathe, 3 speed that required a cover unbolting and the motor mount loosening to change speed. Lookin back it was a pain, but light years ahead of the pole lathe I started with. Make sure the bed bars are perfectly aligned...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

Was that the one that got canned because one contestant had neo-nazi tattoos on his face?

    COP26 progress or same old

All the debate about anthropogenic climate change is fairly pointless. The planet is still operating within the limits of previous extremes as far as we can tell. Population dynamics would suggest we are likely to use up available resources or fall to the next pandemic long before the only bits...

Seeking Assistance regarding router/s and router table inserts please

It'd be a bit of a bodge but can you fit an MDF or plastic blanking plate to your parkside table then clamp the new router to the underside of the table using the threaded holes or studs for the clamps and some careful drilling of the routers plate?

Scheppach DM600 VARIO Mini Wood turning Lathe

Looks like the Lidl Parkside one to me, and that has no Morse taper and a unique thread on the headstock if I read it correctly. I've seen a couple of Chinese mini lathes go on eBay recently for that sort of money and at least you can put after market chuck on those. Often badged as Charnwood...

    Holding 16mm dia knob tenon

Your wooden chuck sounds as good a solution as any to avoid marring the surface. Perhaps add another cut at 90° to the first to get a bit more compression. I've seen people use non slip matting in pin jaws but i can't help thinking that would allow too much movement

    Old age

Someone wrote on here, regarding inherited tools, to the effect of the tool can do this even if I can't. My late FIL was a great maker of things in wood and metal and we still have things that he made in the 70s. It was an odd feeling recently to be using some of his tools to make something...

    Telescopes

We have the skywatcher 200 as mentioned above, add a couple of good eyepieces and it's a good piece of kit. One thing I have found though is it's flippin heavy if you have to carry it out of wherever you store it. Your back will thank you for a little trolley to roll it out on. All we need now...
