    Treehouse Fixing Ideas.

I seem to remember seeing a design made by a blacksmith that used two steel hoops that could be clamped around the tree, with suitable padding under them to avoid damaging the bark. Attached to the hoops were what looked like joist hangers into which joists and braces could be attached. The...

If you are only 2.5m off the ground just put some uprights on stone pads and build round the tree.

    Building control gone mad?

Think boilers are covered by the company that install them notifying the local authority and a central register (can't remember the name). Had to contact them for certificates to sell a late relatives property

Root barrier to protect vegetable beds

The beds at Great Dixter were protected from yew tree roots by sheets of corrugated tin buried on edge, so about 75 cm. I've successfully kept conifer roots out with 45cm dpc buried on edge, but poplars can run a long way and are hungry. I'd suggest the dpc then take a look at Charles Dowdings...

New Lawnmower has leaked oil and has creamy thick residue in foam filter...

Most manufacturers ship machines with no fluids in at all. Some of the better online suppliers will oil and fuel the machine to test before shipping and so the machine may get upended in transit, leading to a cylinder full of oil. Krome, I'd follow Pete's post about checking the cylinder...

I'm with clogs, get it back to where you bought it. Sounds like they've sent out a customer return that someone else has wrecked

What paint for pressure treated timber?

Hi all, need some advice. I've been asked to replace the gate where I work, it's a softwood 5 bar gate and I can source one easily at the local ag merchant. The trouble is they want it white, and the current one was painted with Leyland paint from the local Travis Perkins. Didn't last very...

    Cappuccino machine

Anything that gets air in hot milk would do, whether it's a small whisk or a steam injector. Add a simple espresso machine and you are good to go, even a hob top percolator with a cheap hand grinder can make good espresso

    Heatwave

As far as I understand it there are moves afoot to classify big businesses as legal entities with the same rights and responsibilities as any individual, legal personhood if you will. The upshot of this will be to enable the prosecution of these entities for activities that negatively impact...

    I know it's dangerous.......

That's a good idea, and not just for everyday stuff. If you video things like the kids paintings, photos you don't have digital copies of, all the little trinkets, knick-knacks and stuff with the unseen value, at least you have something as a reminder. As an old colleague was fond of saying...

    Glueing pallet wood

It'll work, but softwood can be pretty horrible to begin turning on. The annual growth rings are alternately hard and soft, meaning it is difficult to get a good surface finish as a beginner. I'd ask around and see if you can source some hardwood offcuts, old furniture or old garden trees as...
