If you think they are high on catnip try some valerian. My wife tried a herbal tea with it in, threw out the teabag, came into the kitchen later to find our furry stoner chewing his way through the teabag, staring eyes followed by the munchies then running through the house yowling at thin air!

Single most useful tool in your shop

A square, although to be honest I have 4 different sizes. They seem to get involved in pretty much every job I do. Whether it's checking the drill press table against the bit, marking out, checking frames on assembly, one has a 'backwards' scale I use to set a marking gauge, another lives by the...

Starting to have issues but local GP won't refer to audiology due to waiting list. Nearest private provider wants £4k per ear. Any metal spinners on here? I need a trumpet!😄

Salt and Pepper Mill grinder mechanism set

Do the crushgrind ones need specific tools to shape the recess? I recall one brand did but not which one

    Dremel Advice Please

With that router widget and a good carbide bit it's great for cutting grooves for stringing and fine inlay work, as you can do metal too I'd rig up a device to hold it horizontal on the bench hands free, maybe with a little table for fine sanding/cutting. Add some Meccano cogs and bits and you...

Replace the seals of my double glazings

A can of silicone lubricant will make the new ones a lot easier to fit without stretching. I'll second Dibs' recommendation of Reddiseals

Alternative to Leigh Jig for Box Joints

After watching some videos I made a simple jig to use on a router table. It's similar in principle to the Rockler jigs but only does 5mm size, built from MDF and scrap wood but surprisingly accurate on a cheap Fox router table

Love that mallet, how about something like this to go with it? https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/uppsta-toy-hammering-block-multicolour-60513889/

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

Computing and code left me behind at the ZX Spectrum so I have no claim to any knowledge of how all this works. I do recall some years ago hearing a discussion about the difference between AI and human intelligence. The gist of it was that humans use 'top down' processing, so if we see an...

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

Always found Apache to be a good one, and the plants are small enough to stay on a window sill if needed. Don't usually sow much until early March. At work we have shut the greenhouse down this winter as it has an oil fired boiler, it'll be cheaper to buy new plants

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

Those images are certainly interesting, puts me in mind of game graphics some years back. If you got to the playable limits the physics got a bit wobbly. Can't imagine it will take long for AI to catch up if it is fed enough information. The thing I find most intriguing is whether/when AI will...

Let's hope it gets used for writing instruction manuals, unless it has a setting for 'google translated from cantonese'

    Chair repair advice?

Do the side rails splay out or are they parallel? With those grooves it doesn't look like you've got much room for error and if you have to drill a skewed hole to line up with the mortice on the chair back I'd be worried about breaking through the inner side.

    Joiner made shaves.

A quick dig for stair shaves online found some old manufacturers, Greaves and Fairclough being two. The blades looked to be of the same type as above but the holders rather more ornate. Perhaps the blades were available separately, like unhandled turning tools

Just don't buy the Diall ones from b & q as the capsule coating breaks down pretty quickly. Phillips ones lasted far better
