Woodworking has been a human passion for nearly half a million years!

    How did we do?

Powdered citric acid, about a tablespoon to every 250ml tepid water. Leave the plane in overnight and it'll go black, quick rinse in clean water then allow to dry thoroughly. A rub with wire wool, then light oil or wax and it'll look far better. Or scrape and scotchbrite, whichever takes your...

    How did we do?

That's probably a well worn bill hook, Brades catalogue of 1922 lists 48 patterns, some of which look very similar to that one. An overnight dip in citric acid solution will do wonders for those plane bodies

    Bevelling on a bandsaw

Either use the fence if your confident your saw has perfect tracking, or use a single point fence if not. Quick and dirty way to do this is cut a point on a piece of batten and clamp it to the table so it is just behind the front of the blade, and as far away as needed for the thickness you are...

Cutting groove into door for drop seal

If you've got one of those egg box doors I'd be tempted to get on Freecycle or Trashnothing for a temporary replacement as there's often solid doors being given away on there

Cutting groove into door for drop seal

If your router has holes in the plate then you could make a simple saddle by screwing on ply and a couple of pieces of batten. That should keep you groove where you want it. If you've got some spare timber it would be worth knocking up a couple of door feet to make the job easier

Can I make a dark wood banister lighter ?

Is it dark wood or a dark finish? Have a scratch in an inconspicuous place and see what you are dealing with, then you'll get a more appropriate solution

    A very disappointing day

This is an interesting one, is wood truly free? I have a collection of trunks and oddments I plan to process this autumn and that will take me probably 2 days with a chainsaw mill and bandsaw to turn them into blanks. There's obviously fuel and electric costs, along with the initial outlay on...

    Pastry - Marble Rolling Pins

Going through catering college in the 80s every pastry prep room had a glass rolling pin with a stopper. They were meant to be filled with ice and water when doing laminated pastries but never got used due to the chef's dire threats if what would happen to us if we damaged one. One of our chef...

    A very disappointing day

Stig your experience pretty much mirrors ours, school Christmas fairs were great, summer ones people were only interested in throwing sponges at the teachers. We gave up local craft fairs after paying to sit in a village hall in the Cotswolds hearing 'Arabella could do that better' and...
