    Floating bed project

I think he means that 8 dowels will struggle to stop those leg boards from being twisted out of the frame if the bed is moved back and forth. If you look at the photo you posted at the top of the thread you'll see a board underneath between the two legs, looks like one either side. Adding even...

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Unless I'm mistaken that looks like a crotch piece. It'll probably change shape considerably turned due to all the stresses and strains in it so for me it would be artisan firewood

    Log lamp...

Isn't there a 'rule of thumb' to the effect that the tightest curve for any cable should be 5x it's diameter? This may affect the size of the hole in the base to accommodate a suitable sweep

Dealing with rats in subfloor void

Pesticide resistance is commonplace in urban rat populations so I'd second the advice to get a professional pest controller in. They have access to poisons that are not on the retail market, the 'poisons of last resort' as it were.

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

Did you hear about the Christmas cake on display in the British Museum? It was Stollen. Why is Elon Musk’s Christmas dinner so awkward? He can’t stop talking about his X. Why aren’t any schools allowed to put on a nativity this year? They couldn’t find a stable building. What impact will the...

    What is wrong with tradesmen?

'I'll pull a few pints whilst the wife does some lunches, how hard can it be?' Yep, seen plenty of those

    What is wrong with tradesmen?

Billable hours are certainly fewer than worked hours, and if you run a van, get proper insurance cover, pay in to a pension etc £25 an hour isn't going far. At least now I'm employed it's easier than the family business in the pub trade, 6.30am-2.30 then 6pm til midnight, 7 days a week.

    Mortgage rates / interest etc

Currently have accounts with Chase and Zopa, 4.1 and 4.54 respectively. Both are app based, instant access, pay interest monthly and are FSCS covered. If you put your full PB allowance in either you'd make £170+ a month at the moment, though of course without the tax free bit

    Restore Ercol dark finish

I can't help with how to refinish, but if you want to remove the finish without hours of sanding then scraping the surface with pieces of glass will remove it easily. A local glazier should be able to supply offcuts about 150mm x 50mm which are drawn along the surface at a ~50⁰ angle. It's a...

    old hand tools

As long as you can enjoy making things I think that's the important part. I know of at least one high end furniture company that use CNC routers for the grunt work, then pieces are finished by hand. That's a whole skill set I'd need another lifetime to get to grips with though

Problem with Silver line dovetail jig and Bosch advance trim router

No, I did! Should have linked this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/POWERTEC-71051-Brass-Router-Bushing/dp/B01IMORJHM/ref=mp_s_a_1_27?crid=28UQ6X65X5QV1&keywords=%C2%BD+inch+router+bush&qid=1701352673&sprefix=inch+router+bush%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-27 Think a 12mm cutter with a 12mm bush would work, but...

Problem with Silver line dovetail jig and Bosch advance trim router

If I'm looking at the right model it appears there is a circular plate screwed to the square base. You could possibly make an MDF or perspex sub base with a hole to suit the katsu kit and screw it on in place of the existing perspex circle

    Outdoor plant labels

These are oak, left untreated, after three years of use. The next set will be liberally oiled but they are not long lasting even in a tough wood like this.

Problem with Silver line dovetail jig and Bosch advance trim router

A set like this may be the answer. It's been a while since I used a dovetail jig but I do recall having to use a bush to get the correct clearance for the dovetail cutter being used...

'It bain't' was a common one growing up in Herefordshire, but haven't heard it anywhere else. 'End ut wick' was payday

I can lose the thing I just put down on the workbench so yes, totally understand a 'small' collection like that
