Can anyone tell me what these are?

Thanks for all the replies, Pattern makers tools would explain the odd sized ball ends, fractionally over an imperial measurement so you'd end up spot on for the mould. Hadn't thought about a scribe, makes sense as two are marked 1.000" and according to the micrometer they are. Will check the...

Can anyone tell me what these are?

Hello all, I recently bought a box of odds and ends from FB marketplace and amongst the bits I know were these that I don't. I'm hoping they will be blindingly obvious to some of you. The ball ended things are odd sizes, largest is 26.04mm, one is 15.80mm, another 13.50, yet another 12.40mm...

Which long drill bit for wooden table lamp?

Usually they are fed through the tailstock, you could go through the headstock but I think you'd have to have the lathe running in reverse to cut (not sure I've pictured it right tho). If you've got a drill press you'd probably be ok with a forstner bit for 4-5 inches either side. I'd go with a...

Which long drill bit for wooden table lamp?

Look out for a lamp auger, it's a long shell bit that you use through the tailstock. Not cheap but worth the investment

    Which sucker to go for?

We've got a numatic George that's only used for carpet cleaning and picks up well, not commercial levels of drying but decent for our needs. Simple and very reliable as long as you flush the pump with fresh water after each use. Most moving parts would be user serviceable for you. I've heard...

Hello and welcome. Be warned that turning can be highly addictive! If you are just starting out I'd recommend a copy of Keith Rowley's Woodturning, A Foundation Course: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Woodturning-Foundation-Course-Keith-Rowley/dp/1784940631

    Workshop Butchery....

They are a popular tool in butcheries, but not so popular with whoever has to clean them, especially if the last job was frozen lamb 🤢

    Christmas gift for beginner

Given your budget and the likely cost of good quality kit might it be better to get some good woodworking books? That can fire his enthusiasm and once he's been on a course or two you'll get a better idea of what he'll need

    Broken wood lamp

My mistake. Can't help thinking the one in the pic was a lucky find. Do you know anyone with farm machinery? Two concrete blocks and a front end loader would break it. If you've got a few pieces to experiment with it would be interesting to see whether axing into the wood vertically on one face...

    Broken wood lamp

This is an ideal job for a froe. If not then a log splitting wedge and a few wooden wedges of similar size. Take a look at how the grain runs along your piece. Does the grain run all the way down the block? If so then decide where you want the grain to split and start your split with the steel...
