    Heart attack (cont...)

Roy Get well soon! My Dad had his first heart attack at 62. He had a few more in the couple of years after, but survived them all. He had his last heart attack about 4 years ago. He's now 94. At 86 he built an extension on his bungalow. So don't be too down. Back when he had his first...

    Firedoors

Why don't you phone the manufacturer and ask their technical guys - there must be a reason that they limit trimming to 10mm. If it is to do with the construction, you'd rather know before you start cutting!! HTH Steve

    Saw Burn

    Thanks, Steve :)

    Saw Burn

Following on from the OP, is saw burn (when ripping), even with a band saw generally caused by too many teeth? I was using a fairly fine toothed bandsaw blade on the bandsaw to cut a fine slice off a piece of 2" cherry, thinking it would give a much smoother cut, only to find that the cherry...

Advise on creating a beam with width way curve (Instrument)

I can think of easier instruments to start with, such as a dulcimer.

Advise on creating a beam with width way curve (Instrument)

When you finish, please can you post some photos! You might want to have a look at one of the guitar building forums, as they will have plenty of advice on carving maple caps on Les Pauls. I seem to remember Sawmill Creek has a separate instrument making board. Project guitar is another good...

Router Collet Extension For Handheld Use?

I use CMT router collet extensions with my DW625 in the table (1/4" and 1/2") and think they are great value for money (screwfix have them for under £30). Never tried to use an extension hand held. I really rate them. Steve

    Cheap, solid workbench top ?

I'm in the process of designing a bench build and hadn't thought of fire doors. These from Wickes at £29 look a good bet - and weight in at 32kg, so will add to the bulk of the bench. http://www.wickes.co.uk/lisburn-ply-ven ... vt/200294/

Steve You make it sound much easier than I'm sure it is. I really like your work. Very much in the Folk Art vein. Lovely. Steve

    Chuck won't budge!

Eugene, it sounds like you are speaking from experience! Good news, with my new found confidence, I gave it a whack and it came free. For the record, I clamped my Knock-Out bar in the jaws of the chuck in a 9 o'clock position. I then took a 18" length of oak which I had previously turned to...

    Chuck won't budge!

Thanks, Chas Can I do any damage to the jaws if I hit the bar quite hard, do you think? Steve

    Chuck won't budge!

My supernova2 chuck is stuck like glue on my Nova 1624-42. I haven't taken it off for a few months and now it won't budge. There is no insert on this chuck as it is threaded for the lathe, so there is nowhere to put a spanner. I've given it a spray of the dreaded WD40 and it made no...

Cutting 92mm holes through 6inches of oak...

Welcome BWR, do stay on the forum to tell us your solution. They are holes and a half! And Oak. It sounds well seasoned. Couldn't he have specified concrete - at least you could use a diamond core drill! This is just a thought and may not work. How about drilling a dozen or so small holes in...

    new guitar making book

mmm. I'll go and have a look. I had a nice acoustic guitar that had some bellying, but I hadn't noticed on the mando. Thanks for the thought.

    new guitar making book

Very nice website, Nigel. I hope you stick around on the forum, as I am sure I could learn a lot from you. I see your mandolins have truss rods. I have a Fylde mando, and for some reason, in his wisdom, Roger Bucknall does not use a truss rod. The instrument has an increasingly high action...
