    Seasoned oak turning question

I have been having difficulties turning a bowl from a lump of seasoned oak. There are a few knots in the oak and I'm finding it hard to stop the bowl gouge from bouncing. Any tips? Should I change the speed - I'm taking it pretty slow. Could it be my tool isn't kept sharp enough? Should I...

    Tankard Finish advice

I have an oak tankard. My favourite real ale vessel. When I bought it from the maker I asked about the finish and was told it is yacht varnish. It is still completely sound and waterproof about five years later. I've used it hundreds of time. I don't leave the beer in there too long (not to...

    Nova DVR/1624-42 shelf support

Mmm. Did the legs look right? I can't understand how to get them wrong, but if it is possible, I'm sure I will! S

how old are you and how many hours do you work

Andy I've been in a similar place to you. I'm not saying go all religious, but I found a great deal of help going to Quaker meetings. I'm not religious. You sit there for an hour in silence. It is like being dipped in water. For me it was about taking time out from the hectic world around me...

    Nova DVR/1624-42 shelf support

Hi Steve Yes it should fit the DVR XP. I designed it to work with my new 1624-42, which has exactly the same stand. I reckon I will have it in about two weeks, so watch this space for pics. Cheers Steve

    Nova DVR/1624-42 shelf support

Hi folks I have designed a simple but effective steel shelf add-on for the Nova hybrid lathe stand. I am having one made for me by a local steel fabricator. Basically, it fits onto the cast iron bracket on the stand. No need to drill or mod the existing stand. It will be made from 6mm...

    Nova DVR bed extension

Hi Pete The old or the current version? I've just got my new Nova 1624-42 and may be up for a bed extension, depending on price and postage ;) Cheers Steve

    V/S or manual belt change?

Well, my new nova turned up this morning. Roll on the weekend when I can put her together and fire her up. Can't wait! Cheers Steve

    Spalted Elm FInish?

+1 for paraffin. I finished a nice little elm bowl in sunflower oil recently with a little beeswax on top. If looked smashing.

    Headstock runout/vibration

Yes it is, though as the old problem was cured by tightening up the handwheel I thought this was a different problem. But maybe we are back to the old bearing question. My new lathe arrives Monday, so I will have plenty of time to sort the CCSL without any pressure. Thanks Steve

    Headstock runout/vibration

Any ideas how to deal with a tiny wobble on the spindle? I suspect it may have been bent very marginally in use. The bearings have no obvious play. Although it is only about 0.5mm, if you add a chuck and mid sized bowl, it is exaggerated considerably. Not sure what else it could be, but I'd...

    V/S or manual belt change?

Well chaps, I finally opted for the nova 1624. The deal was too good to pass on. The Killinger is lovely but I can't justify the extra money. Time will tell but right now I am pleased with my decision. If I want v/s in the future I can always upgrade or sell it:) All the best Steve

    V/S or manual belt change?

Hi Eugene So you'd go the same route again then? i.e. buy the manual nova and separately add the speed genie variable speed, and not get the cast iron legs? Cheers Steve

    V/S or manual belt change?

I thought very seriously about the Jet and went to Axi to see it. But it is BIG! compared to the other two;)

    V/S or manual belt change?

I'm mulling over this question as I am planning to upgrade my lathe. I was all set to get a Nova 1624-42 (which seems ace value for money) when my 30 year old push bike looked at me and said "whatever you buy will be with you a very long time". Once I got over the bicycle talking to me, I...

    Ear defenders with built-in radio

I have a pair of these. I don't use them in the shop and agree that you need to have your full brain in gear when operating anything that can hurt you. I use them as Axminster suggested - for mowing the lawn. If I have an hour's cutting to do on a ride on, it is tedious beyond compare, and in...

    Which Router?

The T5 does have a fine adjuster. If you are looking for a deal, go look at the Trend website. The have b&c grade stock at good prices. You might also consider the T4 which is great value for money. Cheers Steve

Which cutter, straight flute or up cut spiral fluted?

To be honest I've not had the chance to use it much yet. I can say that it appears to be very well put together and very accurate. I guess it goes without saying that anything that extends your router shaft will exaggerate any existing vibrations and imperfections. But I don't think the CMT...
