    Re-chucking bowls problem

Thanks, Chas I will have a look at the jaws sequence. You know a bad workman always blames his tools, so it would be fitting if I could blame the chuck! Steve

    Re-chucking bowls problem

Paul I bet you've hit the nail on the head. I have been sanding this oak quite a lot. I had some standing up end grain which I sanded out, so I suspect I sanded about 2-3 mm off, which, if it had taken more off the straight grain than the end grain, might indeed have made the outside oval...

    Re-chucking bowls problem

I'll give that a try and see if it makes a difference. I've just had a thought  I tend to cut my wood with a chainsaw so the top and bottom of the blank are rarely flat, I wonder if the action of tightening the blank onto the bowl pulls the screw out of alignment. However, I'm not sure...

    Re-chucking bowls problem

Ok, chaps what am I doing wrong? I mount a blank (say 7" dry oak) on screw in SuperNova 2 and turn back of bowl. No problem so far. Last thing I do is cut a dovetailed recess in the bottom of the bowl to fit the 2" jaws. When I re-chuck the work piece by expanding the jaws into the dovetail...

How loud do power tools have to be to hurt your hearing?

Hi Folks, I have just been looking at various shop machinery. I was dutifully reading the decibel levels without really understanding what they mean in real terms. Whilst googling I stumbled across the American Tinnitus Association's website that is very helpful about what decibels really...

    OK so I'm a plonker!

I have too many of these incidents to recount within the 70,000 character limit! First prize goes to paying and engineer to come out to fix my built in microwave oven. I forgot that they are basically computers with an over attached. He switched it off at the plug, waited a bit then switched...

How do people make round things like eggs, balls and beads?

They also have skill. I have learnt over a number of years that round things like eggs and balls are easier said than done :D

Thanks for comments so far chaps! Keep 'em coming! By the way this home made jobbie made me chuckle - anyone ever done this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/old-home-made ... 500wt_1173

    Degree in furniture making

Rog, I am interested in your comment. I am 'resting' at the moment and thought of approaching a local furniture maker with just that request as I can't think of a better way of developing my skills, but I haven't plucked up the courage to ask - I have assumed that they would not be interested...

Nova Lathes - are they horribly expensive to repair?

I went for the 1624-42 Nova and have been extremely happy. I took Boysie's excellent advice that I could upgrade to the Haydock converter if required; but the speed change is such an easy process that I can't imagine wanting to go for the electronic variable speed. Just to put this into...

Bandsaw question :Is the SIP 01444 bandsaw worth the extra?

I am mulling over whether to buy a brand new band saw. I have failed to win about a dozen ebay auctions, so thought I'd have a look at new ones. I don't have a bandsaw at all at the moment. I will use it for a range of tasks, including making larger turning blanks from hard woods, resawing...

    Trend Airshield Pro

How are you getting on with the ear defenders? I've taken mine off now as I can't get them not to snag with the headband, which tends to amplify the vibes from the motor. I think I must have an odd shaped head or my ears are at the wrong height. They work well with a bit of fiddling (the...

    Guitar buyin advice anyone?

Mick Do it - take the lessons! I played for 30 years before getting lessons (even played in a regular gigging band which supported Mud in the early 80's without knowing a semi-quaver from a minim). I never really got much further. A few years ago I started lessons - TAB style - not for me...

Wadkin Time Warp Workshop - Kent

How fantastic! I'd get in touch with the Amish in the States, I seem to recall a post elsewhere here showing an Amish workshop powered by a horse with a treadmill! Just think what they could do with this lot:)

Axminster - Be Aware of 2012 Prices

I noticed that the loaf of bread that I buy each week has gone up from £1.39 to £1.55 today - over 11% increase. I suspect that this is a taste of things to come. Sorry to be gloomy. Happy New Year!

    Home made cole jaws

Very impressive indeed! I had been looking at the Nova cole jaws, but they are 10" which is a bit restrictive. Not sure I understand the objection to ply. Is it a concern that the fixings are more likely to work loose? Cheers Steve

    Public sector strikes

My first job was working in a hospital laundry in the early 80s :) I'd managed to blot out the draw sheets from the operating theatre until I read your post!! £65 a week. Those were the days.

    Seasoned oak turning question

Chaz and Paul Many thanks for your very helpful replies. Speeding up is counter intuitive when the piece starts to feel out of balance, but now you explain it so well, it all makes good sense. Best wishes Steve
