    Flattening a small door...

Thanks for the comments, however just to clarify: for the past 10 years this has been in the hall of our eco house, which we run quite cool - it's a really constant environment. There is no damp at all and no local heat source. As far back as I can remember (35 years) the door has always been...

    Flattening a small door...

The back panel. The moulding is warped too - it sat in my wife's parents farm kitchen for 20-30 years and frankly may have been warped even before then. Originally it came from my wife's grandmother in Cornwall...

    Flattening a small door...

We have a family piece of pre-WW2 Waring & Gillow furniture - a nice, small, dark wood faux-jacobean dresser. The top small door is warped (see photos) - it's about 45cm wide x 30cm tall and maybe 15mm thick in the middle. The axis of the warp is horizontal and the max displacement is about...

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

Having spent some time living in the Middle East and in deserts/up mountains, a small but amusing factoid is that the Arabic for "desert" is "sahra" (in phonetic English), and that for "deserts" is "alsahari" or "sahara"! Deserts are often full of life and, IMHO, indescribably beautiful. One...

    UK Sand Blasting compressor advice...

Should I be aiming for an oil-free compressor ?

    Show your sheds

About 100mtrs from the main house, this is my daily commute. Wood store in the cellar. Was originally an early Victorian gardener's bothy which I first rebuilt about 30 years ago and has had a new floor, structural work, electrics, waterproof internal plastering etc since then. Needs some tlc on...

    UK Sand Blasting compressor advice...

That's a shame - I don't really have space for 100lts - it's only a very small (90ltr) blasting cabinet and I can't really justify a 100ltr compressor. I do have a 16A supply that's used mainly for the Kity table saw and the PT, so that's definitely available if needed. What I'm really after...

    UK Sand Blasting compressor advice...

So, I've just acquired a small desk-top sand/shot blasting cabinet - it's a pretty generic one sold under various names, one being the Sealy SB951, though I only paid a fraction of that s/h, complete with 25kg of grit, a very solid work table on castors, loads of spare nozzles and kit etc. Only...

    Containers. Planning permissions?

Tried that - doesn't really help as mildew still sets in.

    Containers. Planning permissions?

Small point. Containers are not great for storing stuff that's moisture- sensitive, e.g. furniture. We used one for exactly the same reason during our eco self build a few years ago and condensation was an issue, especially over winter in our grim climate.

Hence, "hoi polloi" - the many, the people, the masses. SWMBO teaches Latin & Modern Greek (and Arabic & French & Spanish & Italian etc.) so I'm never allow to get away with mistakes like that. "tic" or "tick" is the same in Latin as in English, so I'm led to believe...

    TV cookery....

I have to confess we are folk who do like these mad restaurants and seek them out in whatever country we're in... Having said that, we recently had a truly superb lunch at the "Inn at the Sticks" in Llansteffann for under £30 each. It was every bit as good as meals we've had in some Michelin...

    Left Field

Couple of things here. We're out in the countryside. Septic tanks have moved in a long way from the old sunken brick or concrete boxes in a field with some holes knocked in the side. Modern 2 or preferably 3 stage plants produce pretty clean water into the soakaways. A 70 year old system is...

    Anyone using Raspberry Pi?

Bearing in mind this is required for stage use under lights, did you notice how massive and powerful this item is :)

    Anyone using Raspberry Pi?

A Raspberry Pi would be way overkill - a cheaper and simpler Arduino would easily do something trivial like this. Whatever route you use you'll need an output board to drive the lights as the computer itself has very limited ability to drive more than a few mA of current, however they can drive...

    "How to?" indeed!

"Cable velocity" is simply the speed of signal propagation expressed relative to the speed of light in free space, c. Typically it's 1/sqrt(Er), i.e. a fraction of c, or 100/sqrt(Er) which is a percentage of c, where Er is the dielectric constant of the surrounding material.

    "How to?" indeed!

That's the speed of light in free space (vacuum), not the speed of propagation of a signal in a wire. The speed of light in free space (a vacuum), c, is very close to 300,000,000 m/s, i.e. 30cm/nS or about 11.8"/nS. Real-world signal propagation speed occurs relative to c, and is defined in...
