I saw a video where the chap had upended a table and wound masking tape round the bottom of the legs to form a well, into this he poured epoxy resin which was thin enough to soak into the end grain before setting,,Ive very little experience of epoxy and I wonder if it was a special thin...
Ah, we learn something everyday, Decoupage is the teqnique for tarting up things by glueing paper onto them,,I wonder why the french seem to have the monopoly on these terms,,,I suppose it just sounds better than “stick paper on it”
Friend of mine was making trinket boxes which he glued a nice period style picture to the lid, useually pictures of old paintings and the like cut from magazines, not sure what glue he used but the top finish was polyurethane varnish, it gave the picture a very slightly yellowed tone and made it...
Allowing air to circulate will be important, but to be honest I can't see that storing fabric cushions outside the house, whether it be box or shed is going to be a success, maybe okay for the summer though if this is your intention? Im partway through a garden table build and Im trying to think...
At the cheap end of the market I bought an Irwin plug cutter, fancy looking with a solid body and a single slot/cutter, looked “the business” but wouldnt cut plugs unless I really leaned on it in my big mains powered drill,,next up was a Lidls one, its got four rather flimsy looking legs as...
I think it should be the law that anyone riding an “e anything” should be preceded by a bearded man carrying a red flag,,the public left to its own devices,, who knows what anarchy will prevail?
I think Ive been very lucky with a Timex “expedition” its a plain stainless steel quartz watch in the military style, and if you press the winding button the face which is an ivory colour, is backlit and very bright, though thats not somthing I use often. It was a bootsale buy around 6 or...
Just on removeing the frozen nut, Ive always used Plus Gas penetrating fluid, or similar, not WD40, and secondly you need to get the nut nice and square on a solid metal surface and give the flats a few good wallops, use a drift if you cannot get a clear hit at it, that and soaking in...
Intresting, does it say something about the quality of preserver or was it to do with the way you laid the boards? My thoughts are that for my table I will cover most of my joints with the tabletop boards, and these boards will have a drip on each side to help stop water tracking round,,,,I will...
Hello Dave, intresting idea, I did have thoughts about glueing the joints, ordinarily for indoor projects I would use PVA but because this is going to live outside with a polytarp over it in the winter I wondered if trying to glue the joints might cause me problems? the joints will be screwed...
Been thinking about these problems myself but in relation to a garden table Im about to make, Im using presure treated 75mm fence posts topped off with 45mm boards, and there will be a few half joints, my concern has been wetess sitting in these joints, I think that I will be able to position...
The policeman gets shot and killed in the film the “Blue Lamp” which then lead onto the Dixon of Dock Green series,,,I think a lot of guns around after the war,,,
I rebuilt our old pine chest of drawers a couple of years ago, a very simple cottage piece and whilst the drawers are indeed dovetailed the main carcase is held together with miniature cut nails, which I mostly reused, I think a good bit of their holding power is that they rust slightly and...
Blue coat for me, baggy enough to wear a body-warmer underneath if need be but given its just light cotton its surprisingly warm but I like the brown ones, mine also has poppers which I really dont like. Ive been toying with the idea of a bib and brace, the yanks have some really lovely ones in...
Its funny but somtimes you find that opening out a hole in metal can actually more dificult than just drilling a hole, its to do with the pointy bit of the drill not having anything to do, your just relying on the flutes being sharp and hard enough to cut through, well thats my experience anyway,,
Please forgive my complete ignorance but if I found myself haveing to drill a hole nearly 3ins wide and 10inches deep and I had access to a lathe I think I might try sharpening up the teeth on a Core Drill and seeing if with a bit of force and a lot of clearing if it would drill through, if its...
Toolstation have a range of handles for sledge hammers and picks, around £6 or £7 I bought one and trimmed it to fit my wood splitting maul several years ago and its had some heavy use without problems. I suspect most builders merchants have them.
Dr W above found the Wardian Case, these are the cases I had read about, looking at the old photo you see a fairly roughly made “wooden crate” but the design hints are all there, the use of bars, perforated zinc, perhaps zinc trays to hold the water, sisal rope and glass, these are the elements...
When I read this post it struck a chord, Im quite intrested in historical navel stories, Patrick OBrian is a favourite, but I recently read an account of Capt Blighs fatefull voyages and there was something there about special cases for transporting specimin plants,,,these might not help you but...
At first glance I thought I was looking at an old Flip Top bin and thinking that might help tidy up my scraps corner,,,quite a shock to read its an ice cream tub!,,but its got me thinking about Addis Bins now though, thanks.
Steve.
