    New one to me

I recently saw somthing on the internet where an American chap had an aerosol of somthing like nitrogen which he gave a sqirt into the can before fitting the lid, this gas being heavy dispersed the air in the tin and stopped the contents skinning over,,I thought it was a very clever idea and...

    Drilling accurate holes.

The type of wood will have a great bearing on it, however I think I would want to have the piece sandwiched between two bits of flat timber and well clamped as close to where the holes were being drilled and also well clamped down to the table. Forstner bit would be good but for odd sized holes...

    Worcester Bosch CH Problem

Its very difficult for me to fully understand your actual set up but re reading your posts am I right in thinking that you are still using the old “programmer” with the segmented dial? Youve changed the boiler complete with stat and reciever so these parts should be okay, but,,and Im no expert...

    Worcester Bosch CH Problem

I dont know about your boiler but if its a “combi” boiler I doubt it will have a 3 port valve, anyway to get back to your original thoughts on it, I installed a Horstmann RF wireless thermostat, all working fine untill one morning I notice our heating is running,,after much head scratching I...

Sorry but couldnt resist showing my version of your magnificant creation, mine was made out of building timber and was built to hide a great big door sized hole in the wall where somone had removed a chimney breast, it made use of the hole as it was inset and covered up the broken brickwork,,the...

    Window frame mould removal advice

Hi, I have had great success with thermal lining polystyrene veneer covered with the really heavy duty reinforced lining paper you can now buy. We had a mystery patch of damp high up in the corner of the front room, tried everything to prevent it, had experts of various kinds give opinions but...

HSS Up cut Spiral Router Bits (from ebay!)

Quick update, got the spiral upcut bit out and straight away could see that its not designed for plunging, I thought it was, however to give it an easy time I was planning to drill out most of the mortice first anyway and this then became a nessesity. Its a 1/2ins bit and I used the Stanly dowel...

How you know people are interested in fake woodworking...

Utube videos are a bloody godsend when Corrie and the “Love” programs are on, see a few crazy Americans, plus a few bumptious “experts” mainly doing things I wouldnt be intrested in anyway, but all entertaining in an informative way even if your looking at what they are doing and thinking...

    Making a 70° or 130° degree cut

Well spotted Terry, where was I when that old simple geometry was being bandied about at school? Not paying attention I suppose and now half a century later it comes back to bite you on the ***. Certainly my skilsaws wouldnt posess that depth of cut but I did see one being used by some american...

    Making a 70° or 130° degree cut

Perhaps a factor might be how “tall” his piece of ply is when on its edge, on my wobbly saw table the thought of holding a wide piece up on its edge would give me sleepless nights,,,I was just thinking of a simple way around his problem,,but your right a multitude of machines could be made to...

    LED lighting for workshop

Im not a fan of daylight tubes, we were given a load of inset units with daylight tubes which I fitted in a hairdressers, within days complaints about colour rendering and the customers all looked dead! I spoke with Osrams tech bod who laughed when I told him and said that daylight tubes will...

HSS Up cut Spiral Router Bits (from ebay!)

My application is for bread board ends on a table, softwood but around 45mm thick and 160x 300mm, so fairly heavy, Im making it up as I go along but my loose plan is to create loose tennons from some oak I have which will be around 50 or 60mm deep and perhaps 60mm wide. Yesterday was spent...

An Many thanks Johnny, thats very intresting, I had a look at the Leigh Jig, super looking bit if kit, Ive knocked up a simple ply one to go with a 30mm guide bush, clamps to the side in a similar way but without any adjustments short of packing it out with cardboard! Your comments on the...

HSS Up cut Spiral Router Bits (from ebay!)

This is all very intresting stuff, much more informative than anything I could find on the internet in a couple of hours last night, even if there are degrees of opinion they are all valid and very informative. The bit Ive got is clearly designed to plunge so my plan was to plunge in steps along...

HSS Up cut Spiral Router Bits (from ebay!)

Exactly my impression, my router bits get quite hot, I'm not in a rush so I can afford to take my time and perhaps thats the way forward in both feed rate and speed, but its no good hanging around and letting things heat up either,,,a bit of a balancing act I think, the trouble is that thinking...

HSS Up cut Spiral Router Bits (from ebay!)

Many thanks everyone, much appriciated, as you guessed my concern is burning out the bit, looking on the net about suggesed speeds etc for hss bits I can really only find CNC applications, but they do say that chip size and speed are the key to keeping the bit cool, but I know nothing about cnc...
