    Today’s lesson “NEVER POINT”

Your mistake was putting them in the bath, the dishwaher really cleans up oily engine parts, much better than you could imagine.

How do I remove this bearing

We had an enormous hydraulic press which as you say gave a quite frightening crack when a very tight bearing let go, and being a dealership we had a good selection of the formers that fitted most bearings, but every so often you found some oddball one and thats when we resorted to the big...

How do I remove this bearing

On half shaft bearings we used to split the outer with a club hammer and chisel and then a couple more good hits lossened the inner track which could then to be slid off, it seemed to work well enough 40yrs ago,,,

    Boat builders' thread

We have a little Cornish Shrimper, GRP with a few wooden bits and I spend more time than I can really afford looking after it,,as everyone has said, wooden boats look wonderful but the maintenance is beyond me, esp as your probably going to be catching up on years of previous neglect. I recall...

    Wood for Outdoor Table

Ive just built one 30”x 7ft out of regular tannalised building timber, 3ins fence posts for the base and 45mm thick top, weighs a ton and two people wouldnt lift it easily,,,completely the opposite to what you want but I have to say that in building outdoor furniture, perhaps esp tables, there...

Sash window - a bit lost

Cutting Glass,,I was told that with secondhand glass, that being the only stuff I would ever need to cut myself, it was best to let it warm up and not try when its freezeing cold, to give the cutting line a good clean then to give it a vigorous polish with a rag just before the cut, I think the...

Loose tenon joinery on Sapele frame? Sensible or not so sensible?

Could you use the techniques used when assembling a tabletop with your joints,ie only haveing one end of your tennon glued and elongating the hole for the dowel to allow for across the grain movement?

    Redex

I think Redex was sold as an “upper cylinder lubricant” the idea I guess being that going in with the fuel it somehow lubricated the valves and rings,,I cannot imagine it really worked though, I also saw people pouring it into the carb with the engine running, the impressive and probably ozone...

Is this Mahogany wood? Also, skirting boards for sale

A few years ago a neighbour made a delivery to a company who had an enourmouse pile of “mahogany” waiting to be burnt, they told him it was used as the packing around big loads of wood to stop the strapping biteing into it, and was good lengths and widths plus it was anything up to 2ins...

Using a hacksaw cutting big(gish) stuff. Or how to saw a railway line.

Heat the very end and let cool to remove the temper, Ive done this to broken clock springs, you can hold the blade in some crappy pliers or a bit of wet rag to contain the heat but if the blade is held from under the flame just the end should get red quick enough.

Using a hacksaw cutting big(gish) stuff. Or how to saw a railway line.

Found this on the internet, seems like an intresting idea, and a neat twist, but it might be worth trying on an rsj too, perhaps a couple of blocks of seasoned oak, top and bottom edges angled to suit an RSJ and bolted through the web with substansial washers spreading the load,,would this make...

Using a hacksaw cutting big(gish) stuff. Or how to saw a railway line.

I love the look of the railway line anvil and such a nice thing to have made, but for those that just want a basic “anvil” you could do worse than a lump of RSJ, mine was given to me by an engineer, a 12ins length of flame cut rsj which I think is around 6x8ins. Its cut square at both ends and...

Any idea what this is ?

As a complete guess and as you have 3 all very similer, they seem to be designed not to crush, they sqweeze down to a preset size, how do they put rings in animals noses? Could it be for that, the tongs hold the open hot ring which is then closed,,maybe you need to ask a Goth, they have rings in...

Pads for chair legs on wooden floors.

Same as above for me, the plastic,,,probably nylon, ones with the pin, they come in at least two disc sizes, around 12 and 20mm and pre drill the legs, our ones on dining room chairs on a quarrytile floor have lasted years without issue and the ones I nailed to our old garden table to hold it...

    Wolf Drill Overhaul

Ive had great success with Plus Gas on things like King Pins, if youve been able to get it to move perhaps a good squirt of Plus Gas and knocking the parts back on before trying again, Ive got difficulty visualising what your doing,,is it a wheel with built in hub onto a keyed shaft? Steve.

Hi Terry, thats just what Im hopeing for, securing anything is quite difficult, Ive got a big padlock on a solid enough door and my hope is that if they try levering at it with a spade or whatever the alarm will make them run off before theve done too much damage. Is this a router, or is this a router?

I guess the difference is that even a very skilled person is going to have to use templates to achieve the level of precision shown in the video,,this gadget does it for you, and the way things go it might just turn up in lidles in the not too distant future,,,I will have to wait till then.
