    Green Oak for Door Frame?

I have an exterier door frame to replace and Im wondering if I could use oak? I know its prone to sectional shrinkage and maybe is a bit wilful along its length but it would of course be secured in place. Whats the general feeling about Oak in an application like this? Steve.

How to make decent long-ish dowels at an early home shop?

I recently used a method I found on the internet, a bit of steel plate with a 15mm hole drilled through it, the hole was around 10mm from the edge and I then hacksawed an angled cut down into one side of the hole, the long side of the slot was then bent with a cold chisel a little out of line...

    Wax Finish Fail

Sander sealer,,,I never thought about it, seems like a commercial / production thing to use but Im probably wrong, however in recent years Ive been laying on a coat or two of thinned polyurathane varnish before finishing with Briwax and am very pleased with the results esp on window boards and...

    mft style workbench

Thats a lovely bench and a super bit of work, but just so I fully understand, this is really an assembly bench,,a perfectly flat surface rather than a workbench?

    Workzone Router Collet Stuck

I think every router Ive ever seen has provision on the spindle for a spanner, it might have to be a thin one but its useually there, Ive got an angle grinder with the same problem and I expect the locking pin was made of some cheap soft steel, but again there are spanner flats to fall back on...

    Workbench Vice advice

But could you swop out the long front edge timber for somthing a bit thinner but deeper, the bench would be just as durable and the apron could be used to stiffen up the frame, just a thought as I dont presently have a bench vise in service, does the thickness of your top allow the fitting of a...

Hmmm, if I really squint I can just see some hopeful punter standing in from of the great big hairy character that lurks in that shed asking if the grotty pile of crap poseing as a compresser has all the nessesary (and very important!) paperwork for the welds,,,if its likly to happen I would...

Looking for a type of file but I don't know what it's called.

Initially thought of a Tile file and then saw the pictures and the description of it being bendy and Im failing to grasp why anyone would want a file that bends,, Is it so that it could be curved out of a electrical metal box?

Home Made Compressor, Would you buy it

Seems to me to fall into that catogary of “if you had made it yourself” it would be a great little machine if it worked okay and did what you wanted it to do, but personally I have to say that it doesnt look appealing,,,I see its still got no bids,,,but its got wheels and I think the sea is...

Wardrobe construction - Biscuit vs domino

As said above a wardrobe sized thing in MDF is bloody heavy and I would be worried about moving it against biscuits which could easily break or break out, maybe better to assemble in situ as you go, pre drill your clearance holes and use good quality mdf “end grain” screws, Ive not used them for...

Planing to make my own table saw out of a circular one... what would make a good circular saw to use?

Im rather stuck with my home made sawbench, this incarnation is a large Bosch skillsaw (ex bootsale) mounted on a piece of mdf which in turn is bolted to a very old workmate frame. It has a riving knife but no guard, no nv switch. My carpentry is not fine quaity stuff but I make bits and pieces...

    Material for Home Made Pulleys

I dont like the idea of plywood pulleys because the belts will be running on a real mix of fibres/grain, as they get bigger I suspect it matter less but if they were small, say less than 100mm i would rather use a bit of hardwood which I think would in use polish itself up to a good durable...

Jet JWBS-16 Bandsaw - electrical issues

You may not know this handy tip.

Im fairly sure Ive seen non returnable ratchet straps on brand new crated motorbikes, they strap them down to a wooden base and drop a box over the top,,the crates and straps are non returnable to Japan I guess. The big ratchet straps used to secure loads to lorries are really quite a different...

    Marmite

Yep quite right, its clear though that there are oddball sizes out there and if like me you were given a couple of half sheets of ex packing case its handy to know that,,I wonder why they go to the trouble of making very slightly thinner stuff, it seemed perfectly normal in all other respects?

    Marmite

I have some utility room cupboards where I varnished the interier faces of the MDF carcase and I think it looks good and has been a durable finish for 7 or 8 yrs, edges of course took a bit of pva to seal them. Just a warning, I was given some big bits of an MDF packing case, but when I came to...

    Electric Issues - Help

When he says a fused spur are we assumeing that this is just that, taken off a ring main, but does he mean that his armoured cable is connected to a spare way on his consumer unit, much more likely I would have thought?

    Workshop flooring

Ive got a couple of childrens play mats that were in a skip, these seem to be the same stuff as garden kneeling pads, around 10mm thick and dovetail together, smooth one side and very slightly dimpled the other, around 600mm square, I chopped off the dovetails and just use a couple as kneeling...
