A few more gonks for christmas. Didn’t notice the centre dimple in the nose at first (it was the end of a long day at work). Combined tiredness/laziness didn’t fancy turning another so I’m calling it a ‘feature’. Some of the bobbles aren’t great either

First go using ebonising lacquer and gilt cream on ash. Not super happy about the shape, in my mind it’s got a ’genie in a lamp’ vibe going on. Quite pleased with the finish though.

That really is lovely. Whoever is the recipient, subtly advise them not to put it in a place where it’s not going to get blasted by the sun. I turned a load of apples and a bowlfor my mum. Theyve been exposed to sunlight constantly for a couple of years and the padauk and purple heart ones have...

    Chop saw problem

I’ll probably do that at weekend. Definitely won’t be fun

    Trim Router

Forgot to mention in my previous post. i don’t own the plunge base for the Makita and Katsu. So my message about the depth adjustment being a slight pain is for the fixed bases

    Chop saw problem

Bit of a long shot but thought I’d ask anyway. My site mitre saw started playing up this morning, sounded a bit weird and the blade would stop occasionally. Before it stopped altogether it spat out something black so I’m guessing the belt has snapped as the motor works fine. Here’s the long...

MFT-style vs. Trad-style workbench design (is there a middle ground??)

I built an apron bench a few years ago. Just redwood and an Axminster 9 1/2” vice. I wanted it done asap so I glued and screwed the laminate top. I didn’t drill dog holes and retro drilling them would have definitely encountered a few screws. Instead I just screwed stops, etc to the top, that...

    Rutlands black friday sale

The only thing I’ve ordered from them recently was a set of workbench casters (which I used on my lathe stand). Pretty good. I am seriously considering getting a router plate/lift/motor set (R15 I think). The only thing making me unsure is the lack of a depth lock and I saw a bloke on YouTube...

Using a skew with one hand behind your back!

I think I’ve heard Mike Waldt mention his name a few times. He’s obviously very skilled and confident, but I just don’t see the point in risking injury. I can ride my bike no handed but I choose not to for the same reason. im impressed hes done for Christmas already tbh.

    Festool Domino patent

I think it’s pretty much the same with most tools. Some people spend loads on a table saw (saw stop, powermatic, etc). I’m happy with my Bosch job site saw..do I think the others are a rip off, no. If you can afford it, you enjoy using it and it makes you more productive then it’s worth the...

    Trim Router

I’ve had the Makita one since about 2018 and a Katsu since 2021..both are good. But as mentioned, the height adjustment isn’t brilliant. I use mine a lot for doing door hinges and latch plates (Either free hand or if I’m doing a lot of doors with a flush bit and jig). Dialling in an exact depth...

    Airbrush cleaning

Finally ordered an airbrush, primarily to use with chestnut spirit stains. Im unsure what liquid is best for cleaning, so any advice would be much appreciated

True. He’s a very wealthy business owner (and a nice bloke) so money isn’t really a big concern for him. I told him there was a fair amount of monetary value in the timber, he wasn’t bothered. At the time, he was having some landscaping done and the guys working there would randomly take the odd...

lol…I’ll just say Greater Manchester ( that was the one sunny day of the year). To be honest, I’ve not got much of the timber left as I’ve made the chairs, other bits/bobs and a fair bit of it was either ready made propellers or had wood worm. Probably why he gave it me (to get rid of)

Neighbour recently took up all his ipe decking and said I could have it. Even after sorting out all the crap, I was left with boat loads of the stuff. Probably sounds ungrateful as it was free but it’s the most evil timber to work with, splinters galore and destroyed thicknesser blades. As a...
