Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

First, a butcher, now prissy! Its a good job you're a fellow Mancunian otherwise I'd be using some choice language!! :D Seriously though, my dislike with the square mallets is the majority use square handles. The ones on the page I linked to are the only square type I've seen with round...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

Think its best we leave my past history out of this. It's already got me into trouble on this thread :D I definately appreciate the help though :D That goes to everyone else too

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

That mallet definately looks good but I thought the rounds would be difficult to use, or am I being paranoid? Are these type ok for joinery use (fitting hinges, locks, general notching, etc)? Can someone explain how a metal mallet won't damage a chisel handle? Being brass with a timber core (the...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

Oh jeez. OK if I was to get a mallet, which would be a good weight to get? Looking on Fine tools, theres a few I like (ish). I actually really like the round ones and the 2 Cherries brass ones but I amagine they wouln't be suited to my kind of work and are difficult to use? I'm still not keen...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

:D Well said. Its pretty obvious my methods are frowned upon. Does this mean I'm a confirmed 'butcher' as Brad implied? :D Ah well, I'll have to live with the notoriety of admitting my chisel abuse. Maybe I should have kept quiet :D hehe.

    Pets..what do you have?

I agree, I'd never leave a dog alone all day. That isn't a problem though as I usually work locally, which means I go home for my dinner (usually via the chippy). Usually someone in the house anyway. No problems exercising, got a big garden and usually take my sisters' dogs on 1 hour + walks...

The japanese don't seem to mind using hammers on wooden handle chisels.

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

:D hehehe. I still remember when I was at college and the odd person would get royally repremanded for clubbing a mortice chisel with a warrington hammer.

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

I think people tend to use the side of the hammer because on a lot of hammers the side has more surface area than the hammer face (a good example is the old fibreglass handled Plumb hammers) so the impact isn't as concentrated, also reduces the chance of glancing blows that tend to do the most...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

I think you've made a good point. The Marples 373 handles have stood up to 13 years of hammering but I have split 2 Footprint red handles. So will probably go for some more 2 Cherries as I found the steel to be excellent and even if the handles do split at any point, they are relatively cheap to...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

What can I say, I'm an animal :D I don't know 1 joiner who carries a mallet round with them. I really don't like mallets, the last time I used one was at college 13 years ago. I'm used to using a hammer and using a mallet wouldn't feel right. I can say I'd probably have less control with a...

    Pets..what do you have?

I'm from a family who have a history of having pets. My parents had a bearded collie when I was growing up and she was wonderful. Now they have a pond in the back garden full of Koi. Not sure you class fish as pets but are lovely none the less. My sister has: a beardie, who is also wonderful...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

Yeah, I definately agree with the holsters being a bit cumbersome to store. I definately need a chisel roll. The last one I had was a bit naff, and the un capped chisel edges cut through it a treat  I'm surprised about your comment about plastic handles being less durable than wooden...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

Thanks Paul, Earlier this year I ordered a few items from Dieter Scmid. Hock high carbon plane iron, cap iron, 220 grit waterstone. So thought I'd get a 2 Cherries to try out (as I'd never used before). I did order the unpolished type as I'd read here about the polished type not being flat...

Chisels (asked umpteen times before so apologies)

As title, this has been asked a million times before, but I'm in need of some chisels. A little background info first. At the moment, my selection of chisels is pitiful. Consisting of: 3/8" blue handle Stanley. Old and acquired for free. Does the job. 3/4" Marples. Yellow/red handle. Had...

    Tape measure

I've got a strait-line laser measure. Think my dad got it free from somewhere and I borrowed it. The only time I use (rarely) is for getting rough measurements for things like skirting boards, flooring etc. It does on occasion throw up some weird measurements, which are obviously wrong. I'd...

    multiscribe

Apologies if it seemed I was dismissing the multiscirbe. As I said, it looks useful and if you are going to get some good use out of it, then fair play. Thanks to bringing to everyones attention, as I'd certainly never heard of it before. My comment about price was made because it doesn't look...

    multiscribe

I do :P I use it a lot, so got the Veritas flat bob, which is a lot better than the normal bullet shape bobs. The multiscribe looks pretty useful and very versatile, but £30?? Bit expensive imo. I'm also at the stage where my toolbox is jam packed and weighs a tonne, so I'm now only buying...

    Coiling a bandsaw blade

Thats a job I've never done, even though I spent quite a large amount of time in the workshop when I was an apprentice. The foreman there, used to coil the blade partially and then just drop it on the floor. I never viewed an uncoiling as I was either: A) Brewing up or B) Cowering behind a...

    door lock & hinge jigs

I spent 6 months of my apprenticeship doing exactly the same. Thats why if theres doors to do on a job, it always me who has to do them. Luckily, door hanging is one of my favourite jobs :D
