    LED street lights

I'm in greater Manchester, they recently changed them here. It definitely looks better here as at least they are all the same colour now. Previously it was a range of white, different shades/brightness of orange/yellow and the odd pink one. On the road where I live, theres an...

    GOT and other TV series

Some great recommendations there. Apart from Narcos (only watched season 1, enjoyed it though) and Spiral (never seen it yet) I've watched all of those and thoroughly enjoyed them. If you have access to Netflix, The Rain and The Dark are also pretty good. I dont mind admitting I enjoyed both...

    GOT and other TV series

Strange finale. Two things I didnt really get (spoilers): Presumably, Jon confessed (without it being shown) about killing Daenerys. Due to Drogon flying off with the 'evidence'. I found it very hard to believe Grey worm (or any of the unsullied or dothraki) would have let him live. A trial...

How many of you use a hand saw as your main way of ripping?

Found this thread very interesting, thanks. I recently had to rip 2" thick oak with a 'semi dull' blue handled sandvik throw away. Took quite a while and was certainly a workout but I really enjoyed it  I found it akin to my other favourite past time of cycling up the biggest/steapest...

    Finish for lined box

Got to agree with the other comments. In my opinion, it looks like you've made a great job of the box.

    So, BE chisels...

As mentioned, ebay can be a source of good tools. Having said, I've got a few Ashley Iles chisels and they really are nice. Two cherries/ Kirschen are also well worth considering, I'm not well up on todays prices but I bought some about 13 years ago and they are still in great nick and they've...

Drilling into the end of a dowel

    Oak box

Thanks for the words of encouragement Mike and Mark. Sharpening is no problem. Carving is definitely on my 'to do' list.

Drilling into the end of a dowel

I was recently watching the youtube channel 'Make Something' (hes a likeable chap but it makes it me cringe the way he chucks things about) and found an excellent tip for drilling the centre of a dowel. Skip to about 8:10 on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPzcB6-Lvg End result...

    Oak box

Thats a great project and an equally great documentation of your process. I've never attempted carving of any sort, the thought of it seems a bit daunting but you have piqued my interest. Thanks.

    Flush hinges, which way round?

Only time I've used them was during my apprenticeship back in 93, so my memory is a bit hazy. I do recall fitting them on 3/4" doors that fitted into a rebated (3/4" x 3/8" rebate) frame and was shown to fit them with the knuckle over hanging the door. Never fitted them in a different...

    Flush hinges, which way round?

I was shown the same way as you. In my minds eye, the other way would look naff.

    Oak bedroom

I've never tried Osmo (yet) but I have used Fiddes hard wax oil in satin on quite a few projects (and different timbers) and have been pretty pleased with it. My workbench has a couple of coats of it and its holding up very well. Nice work bob

Theory of interior house door (and frame) fitting

yeah, its annoying when it happens. Casings should alway go in first if possible (don't mean to sound like a broken record). Having said that, you can sometimes still encounter this problem even with the casing fitted before plastering. I know quite a few plasterers who have no qualms about...

Theory of interior house door (and frame) fitting

I think I've only used them a couple times on casings that were badly out of plumb (door swinging open and binding on carpet). I certainly didn't find them easy to remove as there was barely any clearance for the door to lift past the head architrave. I'd rather just unscrew the hinge from the...

Can you identify this wood please?

The first thought I had when I saw the photos was cocobolo. I'm far from an expert though.

    Another Paul Sellers design workbench

I used the same finish and it certainly resists glue if you get rid of it relatively quickly(cant comment for scraping dried glue off). I spilt some pva (quite a lot) on mine the other way and it wiped off very esily with a dry paper towel. The top of my bench is made from 3 pieces, the centre...
