Agreed, when I'm woodworking at home I use the Footprints and Ashley Iles. Strictly mallet only. On site, I've got a set of Irwin Marples (blue/yellow handles with metal cap). They get the hammer treatment. Hate those chisels but they get the job done.

Looks like you've made a nice job of that. Well done.

It has a pretty relaxed rake. My veritas rip saws came with a relatively relaxed rake compared to other manufacturers. I prefer them that way. On one occasion, I did file one at a zero rake and I really didnt get along with it and refiled to the original rake.

Looks like a rip to me. Also, I'd imagine 4 1/2 tpi crosscut would be pretty rough.

Not totally sure what you mean. Are you referring to architrave when you say 'door skirting'? If so, and your skirting is thicker than your architrave you can put plinth blocks on the architrave.

Whats makes a good one? In my opinion: 1. Easy to make 2. Accurate and allows adjustment if accuracy is slightly out. 3. Versatility I made one ages ago following this video and its been great. Ideally you need a vice but you can always screw/cramp it to your bench...

Sounds like you've got the QS bug. Understandable, they are nice bits of kit.
