    Holdfasts types and uses!

    1. Not sure to be honest. 2. The only type I've tried was the Lie Nielsen one (I paid about £50 from Classic hand tools). I never got on with it as it'd lose grip pretty easily. My bench at the time was only 2" thick, so that might have been the problem. It also deformed the dog holes pretty...

I made a rebate plane, but..

I used to have a 78 (sold it here a long time ago) because I 'acquired' my dad's 778. From what I recall, the main difference is the depth adjustment and fence locking. The 778 has a screw thread depth adjuster, 78 has a lever. 778 fence locks on 2 bars, 78 just the one. I'd just buy the...

    Aluminium sash cramps.

I've had some for about 20 years, nothing wrong with them in my experience. Like many people, I fitted a batten inside which definitely makes a bit of difference. As a comparison to pressure (ime) they exert noticeably more pressure than my uniklamps (probably due to cranked handle). I share...

    Stanley Yankee No. 41Y

Oh wow...I instantly assumed we were talking about screwdrivers. That’ll teach me to read the op more carefully.

    Stanley Yankee No. 41Y

During joinery apprenticeship ( when drill drivers had only just reached 9.6v and were pretty expensive) everyone had yankees. I think I was only one who actually used them though. Most of the joiners used 20 oz claw hammer shaped screwdrivers (hammer) and I recall being told “screws were only...

    Bench top planer recommendations?

Im guessing we're talking about thicknessers...If so, I think most suffer from snipe. I recall (during my apprenticeship) the works had a Dominion beast of a planer/thicknesser that suffered from snipe when thicknessing. My bench top (Metabo DH330) snipes 99% of the time, even with head locked...

    veritas custom plane, need opinions

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the hock iron. I bought one about 13 years to fit in a 5 1/2 and it was great, worth the money imo.

I really need a saw set..

Thanks ED I made a jig similar to the drawing from a scrap of oak bevelled skirting. Poor eyesight aside (magnification needed if I use this method again) it turned out ok. No binding after 1/4" and haven't noticed any veering.

I really need a saw set..

Excellent, thank you. Im pretty sure that site is a new one on me...which could be a bad thing.

I really need a saw set..

I've got a 14tpi saw that desperately needs setting and I can't find my Somax setter. No problem, I'll order a new one but nowhere seems to have them in stock. The lost one was from classic hand tools (with a dictum price sticker on), neither of those have them in stock now. Classic hand tools...

Reynolds Hand Morticing Machine restored (finally).

No doubt, that was a lot of hard work and it looks great. Well done.

    Record Power BS250 Dimensions

Mine suffers something similar, the guides are clear but when you lower the post the guides begin to catch. Most of the time, I'm using the saw for ripping 3/4" - 2" thick pieces that I feel are too short to table saw safely. So I usually just set the guides and leave the post at that height...

    Record Power BS250 Dimensions

thanks I've got the 14" version at work so I'm reasonably familiar with them, but I enjoyed reading your thread when you posted it. Regarding the plastic guards, I removed them. I know they are a safety feature but I won't be putting my hands under the table anytime soon and, as you said, they...

    Record Power BS250 Dimensions

Thanks Mike, much appreciated. Registered an account, downloaded the manual etc. Bit embarrassing that I needed that pointing out to me. Ive bought plenty of power tools over the years and visited the manufacturers websites to check on things. Not sure what I was thinking (or not in this...
