Canal boat people. Please help me out.

Yes. Though, if you've got a garden, pee is a quite effective grass- and weedkiller.

Canal boat people. Please help me out.

As others say: for solids, store them in [closed] buckets the roof. Need to add some bulk material [paper, sawdust etc.] each time you poo. Then, in a couple of months, it breaks down into dryish compost, that doesn't smell. For liquids, use any flush toilet. Overall, you'll be surprised...

Canal boat people. Please help me out.

Have you thought about having a composting toilet? They take a bit of getting used to [we made some smelly mistakes early on]. But once you've got into the rhythm, they're surprisingly easy to run. And they solve the "creeping across ice-bound gangways to the toilet block in winter" problem.

    Joke thread

This is the second stage in the "Mary had a little Lamb" school of binging up children. Stage 1 is when baby is in mother's arms, and mother is crooning to her: "Mary had a little Lamb It's fleece was white as snow And everywhere thatMary went, the Lamb was sure to go" Ahhhhh . . . .how...

    Confused about screws

30 years - and they still come out whole? You're lucky; or you have a boat that's not been in saltwater. If it had, they would have dezincified, and crumbled out as reddish dust. Bronze is better. But I was on a 1907 Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter where the 1" bronze keel bolts were...

    Freud precision shear forstner bits

I can recommend the Axminster cheapos: "Axminster"; not "Axcaliber". When I got my set (±£45 for a box of 6, plus an extension [v. useful]) I was told that they were actually unfinished Fisch bits - with the fire-blackened surface, rather than precision-ground. They certainly cut like Fish ...

    Paint stripping

Nitromors has now been reformulated to meet the new EU 'Elf-N-Safety' requirements. So it's pretty puling, compared to the old days. If it doesn't get the green off, go online and get a litre of Dichloromethane [Methylene chloride, in the demotic]. That's the original - and effective -...

    Glazed units

I've got a sample. I've lent it to the local Council Planning Department, to persuade them to allow DG on Listed Buildings. The little glass pills are not very obvious; you see them only when you look at the right angle, and they catch the light somewhat. Otherwise not noticeable. The cap...

    Glazed units

You could try VIG Vacuum Insulated Glazing units. Been around for some years, but still VERY new to the UK glazing trade. The space between the panes is just 0.3mm. So the whole unit can be 8.3mm thick. They're significantly [20% to 50%] more expensive than conventional DG units. But much...

    Wood Identification. What is this?!!

Could be an Australian Black Wattle/Black Gum. One of the Melanoxylons?

    Retirement

For me, the question was irrelevant: I HATED retiring. I would happily have gone on doing the work I like until they planted me. I GOT retired by the coronavirus, which killed off my business.

    Help a newbie - Stanley 5 1/2 plane

I've had the same problem. There is twist - either in the iron itself, or in the cap iron. Check each one with winding strips. If it's there, easiest is to take it out on the cap iron, grinding it back [and undercutting] until it sits dead flush on the iron when screws down.

    Wrist watch recommendations

I have been a victim of a lamentable lapse in Swiss quality standards. I bought a Mondaine "Swiss Railway Station Clock" watch some 36 years ago. As I recall, I paid about €92 for it. Since then, I have to replace the battery TWICE, and now it's gaining a full third of a second EVERY DAY...

    Best handle wood?

I'd suggest Hornbeam [also known as Hardbeam]. Very hard and tough; doesn't split. Used by people like Veritas and Lie Nielsen for their mortice chisel handles.

why dont tools last any more

I know the feeling. Bought a Mondaine "Swiss Railway" watch to the 1941 Hans Hilfiger station clock design 38 years ago. I've had to change the battery TWICE, and it's already gaining 1/3rd second every day . . . . .

MC4 International Solar Panel Connector ?standard?

Has anyone tried connecting up 12 volt solar PV panels recently? There is [meant to be] an international standard - MC4 - which specifies the exact dimensions for the connectors. They are all "Dog-*****" couplings, with Male-inside Female-inside Male and Female-inside Male-inside Female...
