    Woodworking Apron

Portwest SW10 Welder's Apron. Made from heavyweight leather; one front pocket; proper crossed shoulder straps, so it doesn't 'hang' off your neck. £11.50 to £12.50. I swear by them.

    Broke my compass plane

Why not try turning the knob upside-down, and screwing it down from the top? Then the nut will have all the upper threads to locate it and help you reform the distorted thread at the bottom.

    Best paint for cast iron?

Agreed. The key is the chemical bond bewtween the zinc in the paint and the raw steel. Any barrier - however thin, ruins the effect. Personally, I'd descale and scour clean and bright, THEN give it a pickle with strong hydrochloric acid – then rinsed off with nothing but clean water.

    Best paint for cast iron?

Probably the best is a zinc-rich 'Cold Galvanising' paint, applied to the individual carefully cleaned and derusted gutter sections. such as: • Fosroc Galvafroid • ZG 90 • Trade Paints 'Galvafroid Equaivalent' No need to topcoat, unless you are in a notably acid environment. The zinc...

What can go on top of creosote to mask the smell?

Not so. You just have to buy it in 20 litre quantities. We're using it on the hatch-covers of our Dutch barge, on the new planks to replace the old, rotten ones. Even the manuacturers admit that the new EU-approved and blessed 'Creocote' is no substitute, in terms of protecting wood against...

Which wood for an outside box ?

You can still buy proper Creosote [wood-derived]. Biut only in 20 litre barrels, for "professional" use.

    Zero stretch rope

Your existing nylon rope is the worst possible for stretch. As others have mentioned, climbers use it BECAUSE it stretches so much. Better, in order: • Polypropylene • Polyester • Manila hemp [but beware when wet] • Aramid • Steel wire rope [preferably galvanised; not stainless] •...

Advice requested: fitting double-glazing into Georgian windows

Have you thought of VIG - Vacuum Insulated Glazing? Two sheets of 4mm low-E glass, with just a 0.3mm vacuum gap between them. Held apart by 'pills' of - almost invisible - glass friit every inch or so. It's not cheap, but VERY effective [about equivalent to triple glazing], and little...

    Floor Steamers

Agree about the need to use distilled water, particularly down South where it's really hard. I have a distillation unit in the house. I was worried that the 'Elf-n-Safety mavens at the local council would get pernickety about it; so it's been fiendishly disguised as a condening tumble drier...

What do you wear for restoring machines and tools?

Short sleeves, and a Portwest heavy leather welder's apron. £13; has protected me for 20 years, useful as a strop for buffing off the wire edge of edge tools after sharpening.

Need a kitchen high chair repaired- Suggestions?

Well, there's ambitious! I was thinking of your taking the high chair to one, to get it fixed by one of the volunteers there. If you really want to start one, I'd suggest getting in contact with Repair Café International in Holland. They have 'Starter Pack' instructions that help you...

Need a kitchen high chair repaired- Suggestions?

Why not try a Repair Café near you? They'll do it for nothing. There are Repair Cafés on the RC International website at Thirsk, Hovingham, Sarborough, Stokesley and Castleton. And there will probably be more, that are not on RCI. Find out when the next one is happening, and let them know...

    Tarting Up Ceiling Beams

Instead of sanding, how about using a softish brass wire hand brush? Yes; lots of dust; but it will leave the grain, and even and lighten things up. Hard work though; and mostly overhead . . . . .
