    Please teach me about planes

Perhaps it's office by day, plane wielder by night!

what's wrong with my planing technique?

Still not guaranteed nose diving with the cap iron set, and a plane which hinges somewhere around the middle. I learned this was a most notable occurrence whilst planing workbench feet to a line, This certainly caught me out lol!

    Please teach me about planes

Perhaps that's where you get the idea that using a close set cap iron is akin to scraping? Still waiting for some sort of example of good planing techniques, surely you have seen some youtuber doing things productively to an accurate level like you say. Tom

    Please teach me about planes

Yep, I can see exactly where the high spots of the timber sits whilst it's placed on the bench, and judge accordingly, (whilst keeping Charlesworth's fundamentals) for instance, what a straight edge is, i.e a straight line between two points, so essentially hollow, as we cannot have it the...

    Please teach me about planes

Aye, perhaps it might seem that way, but one must remember had they not been watching videos on mute, that those things are teaching aids, (intended for demonstrating to newcomers) which explain what the plane does accurately, and not pretend. Tom

    Midsaw bandsaw I/D

Maybe Trevanion on the wood haven2 might have some useful nuggets, or at least point you to someone? Great looking machine, who'd leave that behind! Good luck Tom

    Please teach me about planes

Pretty much all hand planing is basic, but there is a lot of daftness, dishonesty and/or lack of precise work from most folks. Try and fight flat and you wont fair well, so a good straight edge of whatever description, and long reach angle poise is about the best way to progress without bad...

what's wrong with my planing technique?

    Wood Identification Help

Looks like red grandis to me.

    Who makes one of these?

Have I seen Ishitani with a larger version of those vernier scribe/depth gauges? Doesn't appear so from looking, so guessing it's another prominent youtuber. I wanted to see if it was substantially larger myself, as I've seen regular verniers twice as large.

    I did a big mistake

I'd see if some sawdust might do the trick on an undersized dowel, if it's just wax it should rub off. Might be worth trying, obviously on some scrap, but if it's just wax then the WD-40 folks reckons it can be used to take crayon off walls?

    Clamps upgrade

The larger ones are excellent, I try and get at least one every time round. Great for when you want a speedy hold down for something.

Who was the customer for a plane like this in old England?

It's nearly big enough to be used as a coopers plane.
  15. Ttrees

    Oooops!!

I'd say there could be some tip somewhere like the OLF or FRETS.com regarding a strip of bicycle inner tube for clamping, worth a google. I think it was Chris Schwarz who mentioned something along the lines of loosing two thirds of brain capacity once the gluing commences! Be nice to have two...

Need a fence for an old Meber bandsaw

Looks like you could shim the rail out to enable blade changing, if you don't mind loosing an extra inch or so, likely the best approach, or possibly even make the rail removal easier with some key holes. I'd look for a review on the rail, regarding the aluminium threads and also if there is a...

    Dimensioning by hand

Aye, fuzzy in both directions when planed, like my auntie's old car seats. Not tearout as such, but fuzz depending on which end you look at the timber. And I find planing where the bench says, visual feelers if you will, requiring a long angle poise lamp like so, makes one see where the plane...

    Dimensioning by hand

Nothing soft about the stuff I posted, that's at least a hundred years old huge window frames which had rusty nails everywhere, and there's not much density lost like there would be if it were iroko or something else. (no rot penetration) It's pure silica and is twice to three times the weight...

    Dimensioning by hand

Or persevering with the non buffed edge geometry and planing where the bench says instead!

    Dimensioning by hand

I've got a load of this stuff at me folks, whatever it is beside the iroko and meranti, it's the toughest stuff I've encountered and the cap needs to be so close that the smallest change i.e a bit too much off a corner will require fixing. I can still comb the fibres with this stuff, but reckon...
